Our Ambition
Our ambition – what we really want to do – is to build a new sports facility that will become a central hub for us and the community where we can train, learn, play and, most importantly, belong and grow.
Each week during term time we deliver coaching and training programmes to over 6,000 students and pupils – that’s over 36,000 individuals each year. We run sports, education, health, inclusion and disability projects in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas through a range of programmes and projects. We have over 50 full-time coaching and support staff, plus our casuals–in addition to a whole army of volunteers.
BUT we don’t have a home!
This will change if we can build the John Jenkins Stadium and sports facility.
We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop the current Moneyfields FC site – slap bang in the centre of the city – to provide all weather pitches, gym, dance studios, boxing facilities, club house and lots, lots more.
We have the plans, the permissions and the project team. We are ready to go and we need your help to kick the project off.
You can become part of the team that helped to build the John Jenkins Stadium by donating here right now.
The Project
Pompey in the Community are being gifted the freehold of six acres of the current Moneyfields FC site, right in the middle of the city, on the understanding we will raise sufficient funds to develop the facility. The new build will include two full-size, 3G all-weather pitches - one of which is a stadia pitch - a MUGA, a training gym and separate specialised boxing gym, classrooms, dance studio, a social club, plus numerous other community facilities. And of course, plenty of parking.
We will also develop and landscape the surrounding grounds to include raised beds for herb and veg growing projects, fruit trees and sustainable planting.
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build a buzzing community hub in this great city of Portsmouth that will mean so much to so many. It will provide a centre for people to call home whilst preventing young development sides travelling as far as Alton and Gosport to find a pitch to play on. It will host walking football teams, women’s teams, Young development teams and of course Moneyfields FC. I’m extremely excited to see this project become a reality and in turn open so many doors for the people of Portsmouth." Christian Burgess, first team player, Pompey FC
Why we need your support
Every time we kick a ball we have to hire a pitch – if there is one available in the city – and spend a staggering £120,000 per year on pitch hire on sites all over Hampshire. This makes us a less able to do our job properly. It also means we are a far less effective and cohesive organisation with less opportunity for growth, and the very people who feel they need to belong end up being scattered far and wide.
It is not only Pompey in the Community, our partners and participants that will benefit, but as there is currently a shortfall of seven, 3G pitches in the city, everyone will be able to take advantage of this ground-breaking initiative.
But, this is not all about football. A specialised boxing gym gives us the opportunity to engage with a much broader range of people from all areas of the city, and will allow us to support Portsmouth’s youth even more. In addition, a multi-use games area, flexible classrooms, studios and social club will allow us to provide something for everybody and help improve health and well-being across Portsmouth.
"Pompey in the Community do amazing work developing our next generation of footballers – 36,000 kids engage each year. But what’s crazy is they don’t have their own facilities. By building Moneyfields FC in to an up to date training ground we can make sure we find the next Alex Bass or Ben Close from across the city. Plus, we will also have a proper hub for the whole community to share." Alan Knight, Pompey FC legend.
The Team
Pompey in the Community (PitC)
We are Portsmouth Football Club's affiliated charity, and is currently 100% self-funded. We run sports, education, health, inclusion and disability projects in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas through a range of programmes and projects. We aim to advance the lives of local people by supporting them to develop skills, enhance self-belief, act independently and engage with the community.
We have been established for nearly twenty years in Anson Road, right next to Portsmouth Football Club and currently have about 50 full-time coaching and support staff, plus our casuals – this is in addition to a whole army of volunteers.
Our programmes and projects include not only many different football coaching and training sessions, but also projects that support some of the most marginalised and vulnerable members of our community. These include our dementia support group, Life and Chimes; Men’s Kitchen, cooking courses for men by men and the award-winning Re-Fit programme that provides sport, fitness and education for those affected by addiction, homelessness and mental health issues.
We have been recognised as the South East Community Club for three years in succession and in 2019 was named the national Community Club of the Year for the second time.
Moneyfields FC
Moneyfields is a local community-based football club with men’s, ladies’ and youth teams. The teams were founded in 1987 and 2017 respectively and play at the Moneyfields Sports, with the men’s team playing in the Southern League Division One South.
In recent years the facilities at Moneyfields have needed more and more maintenance, however, with no funding secured the redevelopment a partnership with Pompey in the Community and the Pompey Supporters Trust was formed.
Pompey Supporters Trust (PST)
PST is a democratic, not-for-profit organisation of Pompey supporters, committed to strengthening the voice for supporters in the decision making process at the club; strengthening the links between the club and the community it serves.
Following the sale of Portsmouth Football Club in 2017 PST had a surplus of funds which the membership have voted to donate £250,000 towards this development. They hope this will be successfully utilised to encourage an additional £250,000 to be donated – hence the crowd funding campaign.
Pomrtsmouth FC Women; Moneyfields FC; PST; Alison Baynes, John Jenkins granddaughter; Clare Martin, CEO PitC; Christian Burgess, Pompey FC and supporters at the launch of the crowdfunding campaign.
The Plan
The total cost of the development is £3.5m and while we have access to capital from a range of sources, we still have a long way to go.
This crowd funding is not only critical to achieving our goal but it also helps us to leverage additional monies from other areas, and offers fans and supporters an opportunity to be part of this exciting project that will underpin the futures of both Pompey in the Community and Moneyfields FC.
With planning permission in place and the full support from Portsmouth City Council we anticipate work to begin later this year, the build to take around twelve months and an official opening launch soon after that.
John Jenkins Stadium
The completed stadium will be more than just a stadium; it will be known as the John Jenkins Stadium, named after John Jenkins, MBE. John, one of Portsmouth’s best loved D-Day veterans landed on Gold Beach in 1944 as part of the Allied invasion of Normandy and died late last year, a month after his 100th birthday. He was a lifelong fan of Portsmouth FC, well known in the city and symbolises resilience, dedication and loyalty; he was a true Pompey legend.
"It never ceases to amaze me just how important the work Pompey in the Community do for so many people in the city and beyond. It literally affects and changes people’s lives. The dedication and hard work by Clare and her team is already highly valued by Portsmouth Football Club, and this facility will enable them to do so much more. The innovation generated by our community department is unrivalled and the passion generated by our fans as a result, unprecedented. I know our supporters will want to help Pompey in the Community build the John Jenkins Stadium and give us all, football fans or not, something we can all be immensely proud of." Mark Catlin, CEO Portsmouth FC.
