POLZEATH SURF LIFESAVING CLUB

RCN 1044042, Wadebridge

Welcome to Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club. Surf Life Saving is one of the fastest growing sports in Cornwall and here at Polzeath we provide training for children aged 7 upwards and adults in all the surf life saving techniques. Many of our members compete in Surf Life Saving competitions here in the UK and abroad and some even go on to become lifeguards. However, all our members gain a skill for life – the knowledge of how to be safe in the water – and along the way have a lot of fun and make a lot of friends. Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club is affiliated with SLSGB and Surf Life Saving Cornwall. Developing life guards of the future.

POLZEATH SURF LIFESAVING CLUB

Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club (PSLSC) was formed in 1990 and is affiliated to Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) and Surf Life Saving Cornwall. The Club has a purpose built Club Hut on Polzeath Beach and has 122 members ranging from 7 to 70 – it’s a sport that the whole family can get involved in and enjoy.

The Club welcomes members from seven upwards and trains them in lifesaving and rescue techniques, beach safety and general fitness in a safe and secure environment. Members develop swimming, board, ski and beach skills and have great fun doing so with a group of like-minded children and adults.

Surf Life Saving is great for growing a child’s confidence. Unlike other sports it comprises many disciplines, so most find some aspect they particularly enjoy and excel in – whether it’s beach sprints, swimming or board.

There are various competitions throughout the year – both in the pool and on the beach – and although not compulsory, we do encourage members to have a go at competing in both individual and team events. As a Club we emphasise participation over winning and encourage all members to challenge themselves.

The Club competes locally, nationally and internationally and Polzeath has had many members selected for the Cornish and GB teams.

The Club trains all year round, on the beach from May to October and then in the pool from November to April.

The Club particularly encourages parents to get involved. We ask that parents of Nippers aged 7-8 yrs, accompany them during their session and we often find that these parents go on to help out, train as coaches and even start competing as Masters! There is lots of opportunity for anyone of any age to train as a Surf Life Saver and the Club regularly runs sessions for parents to learn new skills. The Club thrives on the dedication and time given by it's parent volunteers.

We are a very sociable club and organise several social events throughout the year from impromptu BBQ’s on the beach after a training session to an end of season party and prize giving. When travelling to take part in competitions many members organise to camp on the same site, which the children in particular really enjoy.

As a registered charity we depend on fund raising to support the Club and its activities and to buy and maintain Club equipment. Please support us in our efforts so that we can continue to provide the best possible club environment for you and your children.

Surf Life Saving is divided into age groups:

Nippers – age 7 to 13
Juniors – age 13 to 17
Seniors/Open – age 17 to 30
Masters – 30 to whenever you want to stop!
