Aim

Poll Pri (Cornish for "clay tip") is the new short film from Edward Rowe that is set beneath the clay tips of his homeland in mid Cornwall

Wos on?

Poll Pri is the new Cornish language short film by me, Edward Rowe, (AKA Kernow King). Following in the success of my debut Cornish language short, Mab Hudel (Magical Son), Poll Pri has received significant investment from a major public body. To top up our budget, we need to Crowdfund for an additional £8,000.

What is Poll Pri?

Following in his dad’s footsteps, and his grand fathers before him, young father-to-be Jori works long shifts hosing clay from the gaping abyss of the pit. But the gap between his wages and the new “affordable” housing in his home village threaten to wash away any dream of supporting his family whilst upholding the traditions of his community.

I feel that the area of mid Cornwall is a last bastion of an old Cornishness that is tied to clay mining, and I want to capture the waning culture in this area before it is gone. Of course, Cornish culture is all over the world, but mid Cornwall is old fashioned yet vibrant, Methodist yet at times liberal, industrial yet creative, tough but steeped in family and tradition. It's also my home. With a narrative rooted in family and a culture threatened, the village of Roche and the surrounding clay tips are enormously cinematic".

Why another Cornish language film?

I'm really happy to say that Mab Hudel has had great successes at film festivals in the UK, Europe and Australia. It was a frequent audience favourite and received several nominations for Best Short Film. It won the Jury's Selection at the Wales International Film Festival, and Mab Hudel was the first Cornish language film to play at the internationally renowned London Film Festival. These successes would not have been possible with the support from hundreds of people on Crowdfunder. Thank you!

Encounters Film Festival in Bristol said of Mab Hudel, “It’s refreshing to see the landscapes of the Southwest shown with such a luminous and dream-like approach, reminding us of the cinematic potential of such environments whilst placing the film in the tradition of similar ‘coastline-coming-of-age’ tales, like the works of Eric Rohmer.”

I want to continue telling under told Cornish stories in Cornish, in Cornish locations, that we don't often see on the big screen!
