To get more young people into regular physical activity and educate them on environmental sustainability

by Chris Broadbent in Exeter, England, United Kingdom

 New stretch target

Develop a schools programme to be delivered across Devon and Cornwall, involving children in every process of sustainable sport from designing and engineering new sports equipment through recycling, to training them how to officiate at sports events to participation, building social skills, scientific knowledge, mathematics and physical literacy.

Thanks for visiting our crowdfunding page. Here you’ll see we're doing all we can to launch the world’s first environmentally-themed multi-sport event for young people. But we need your help to make a difference – please donate today.

The health of our young people and the health of our planet are two of the greatest challenges of our time. It’s all of our responsibility to conserve a future worthy of our youth. The #PlanetEarthGames aims to change the lives of young people and their environment through the power of sport and physical activity.

They walk in the footprints we leave today.

We need a minimum of £4,000 by July 2019 to deliver the some version of the Games, but the more we raise the bigger difference we can make to the lives of more young people.

Your donation is an investment in the future of our children and their environment.

The Planet Earth Games will walk the walk of environmental sustainability and is committed to:

* no use of avoidable single-use plastic

* leaving no trace - we will leave Exeter cleaner than we found it

* use of recycled material where possible

* be at the forefront of sustainability in sport

Our work will be measured by the amount of young people we engage with on physical activity and environmental sustainability, but most importantly how many of those change their behaviourial patterns for the better as a result of their experiences with the Planet Earth Games.

South West England is the perfect focal point for this global issue. From the two National Parks  to our two distinct coastlines, the area has an outstanding environment that we must sustain for the next generation.

The environment and sport are intrinsically linked: How can we expect more young people to be active on our coastlines, moors and playing fields if we don't provide a clean, safe, sustainable environment?

The South West Youth Games Trust has a 20 year history working as the region's largest community youth sports event, prioritising young people less engaged with regular activity, for example, from low-income backgrounds, teenage girls, the inactive and disabled.

In 2018, as a result of our work, nearly 1,000 young people joined a local community sports club and  five new under-13 rugby girls teams were created across Devon. We have a history of young people who are happier and healthier as a result of our work.

We have a really strong team working at the Trust with experience of working at all levels of sport from the Olympic Games to your local Leisure Centres. We also have the backing of some inspirational ambassadors such as international rugby player Moray Low, five-times Olympian Jo Pavey and GB international cyclist Lauren Dolan.

Our vision is for the Planet Earth Games to take place in Exeter in July 2019 and on to Plymouth for summer 2020. Longer-term, our ambition is to grow the model from our Devon roots so we can replicate our activities in the South West in other areas of the UK and internationally.
