The aim of our fundraiser is to raise money so we can start shooting our first short film. It will help us fund equipment and pay our crew.
Our journey began 2 years ago, Yasmin and I first met working at the Union club in Soho, a job we both love and as luck would have it, brought us closer to the film world. Our friendship flourished through our shared love of film, mine focused on the filmmaking and hers the acting, and so we started brainstorming.
After weeks of meetings, coffees, dinners and movie nights, 'Plain Sight' was born. An indie psychological thriller exploring themes of obsession, sexual exploitation, ambition, power, revenge, and morality.
Deya is a struggling actress working as a waitress in London who dreams of making it big. When a once-famous acting coach with a shadowy past promises to help launch her career, Deya finds herself fighting an internal moral battle, unsure of where the road to stardom will really take her.
This psychological thriller explores the provocative timely themes of the corrupting influence of power in the entertainment industry and the complex ethics of the #MeToo movement.
Here's a longer synopsis for those of you who would like some more information regarding the plot and don't mind some spoilers!
Deya, a struggling actress making ends meet as a server in London, finds herself drawn into the glamorous acting world when a once-famous TV star and acting coach named Paul takes an interest in her career. Charmed by Paul's larger-than-life personality and promises to make her a star, Deya is invited to his private studio sessions with other actors. Yet beneath Paul's charming façade lies allegations of sexual misconduct tied to the corrupt inner workings of the entertainment industry.
As Deya unravels twisted revelations from Paul's past, her starry-eyed ambitions transform into obsession and imagined violence. The acting job of her dreams deteriorates into a psychological game of cat-and-mouse for power and revenge. She uncovers the dark secrets of a man who exploited his fame, enthralled by celebrity despite the trail of trauma left in Paul's wake. This suspenseful, provocative thriller explores the intoxicating pull of fame and the complicity required to get to the top in the modern entertainment world through one young woman’s unraveling.
We are lucky enough to have already cast three extremely talented actors:
Yasmin Sakki as Deyanira Larsen. Sakki grew up in Aaalborg, Denmark and moved to London over 5 years ago. She has studied at the University of Westminster and the Danish Film Actors' Academy in Copenhagen.
Patrick Toomey as Paul Thomas. Toomey moved to London from his hometown of Sydney, Australia in 1984, attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and attaining an MA in Actor Training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
Sarah Woodward as Jane Sanders. London born, Woodward attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and is currently playing as Eileen Herlie in Sam Mendes' production of 'The Motive and the Cue' at the Noel Coward Theatre.
The mood of the film will be gritty, handheld and dark. I want the shots to create an intimacy between the audience and Deya, as if to personify the camera. Trust will be built up by Deya throughout the film, connecting the audience to her life and allowing them to feel closer to her and her inner workings.
Think Waves (Trey Edward Shults), Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky), Good Time (Safdie Brothers), and Saltburn (Emerald Fennell).
