Aim

PhycoClub is a global network for phycologists and algae enthusiasts to share knowledge and foster collaboration

About us

PhycoClub is a community led not-for-profit initiative dedicated to advancing algae research by building a strong algal community. Our flagship project, PhycoFriday, is a free monthly webinar series where individuals share their work on microalgae, cyanobacteria, and seaweeds. These concise, interactive sessions foster knowledge exchange, promote accessibility in phycology, and build connections among researchers, students, and industry professionals worldwide.

Since its establishment in 2021, the PhycoClub has grown significantly, reaching more than 700 members by the beginning of 2026. Initially focused on a UK audience, we have since expanded our reach to Europe, South America, the Middle East and Southern Asia, attracting speakers and listeners from across the globe. Attendance has steadily increased, connecting dozens of phycologists at each seminar and fostering meaningful discussions within the algae community.

We invite you to be part of this exciting journey by supporting our PhycoClub initiative. Your contribution will help us continue building a thriving community for algae enthusiasts and experts alike.

Why fund us?

Until now, PhycoClub has been made possible by our committee of volunteers, including access to software and communication tools. This support has allowed us to build and share our events and connect a wider audience with phycology.

As PhycoClub grows as an independent initiative, we can no longer rely solely on the in-kind support of our volunteers and are seeking community contributions to maintain our core activities.

As we continue to grow and establish ourselves as an independent community led not-for-profit initiative, we are hoping for support to help us maintain our presence and support ongoing activities and future development.

How Funds Will Be Used

Your generous support will directly contribute to the continued growth and success of PhycoClub. We are seeking community led support to maintain the core infrastructure needed to run PhycoClub. Specifically, your support will help us:

Maintain a platform for PhycoFriday (Zoom Pro Membership)

With a Zoom Business membership, we can ensure the continued delivery of high-quality webinars with unlimited meeting time and up to 300 participants per session. This membership allows us to host engaging discussions, share valuable insights, and connect with diverse professionals.

Dedicated business email address (Proton)

A dedicated Unlimited Proton Mail account will provide a professional, ethical and centralised communication platform with encrypted cloud storage and password manager, ensuring reliable and secure contact with speakers, collaborators, and our community while supporting the long-term organisation and continuity of PhycoClub.

Develop and Maintain a Dedicated Website - (WordPress)

To maintain and develop our newly built website (https://phycoclub.wordpress.com/) we will need a 3 year premium WordPress account and 10 years for the domain. The website will act as a central hub for event schedules and community engagement.

These funds will ensure that PhycoClub can continue to provide valuable content and grow its influence within the global algae research community

If we exceed our target, additional funds will support expanded community resources and future PhycoFriday activities. If we raise less than the target, funds will be prioritised toward maintaining core webinar delivery (i.e. Zoom subscription). If actual costs change, funds will be applied to closely related operational needs aligned with PhycoClub’s mission (for more, check our constitution).
