I'm seeking funding to publish my photobook that tells the story of the environmental crisis through pictures of South East England.

What is a Polycrisis?

It's a term that describes a complex situation where multiple, overlapping and interconnected crises converge and amplify each other.  This creates a predicament that is unstable and extremely difficult to manage or resolve.

Does that sound familiar? Does that sound like the world we live in?

About me.

I'm Chris Jerrey, a photographer and writer based in Southeast England. Crying Won't Help You, Praying Won't Do You No Good is my first book.

As I understood more about the global environmental crisis, I realised the importance of people speaking up and saying "This is wrong, this should not be happening". I have worked with groups like Extinction Rebellion, photographing their actions for publication in the news media, and I have published my writing online.

It's time for the next step.

About the book.

Crying Won't Help You, Praying Won't Do You No Good is a photobook full of evidence of the environmental polycrisis in southeast England. This is my backyard. I photographed the tsunami of rubbish, degraded land, and polluted rivers. I wanted to show that the effects of the crisis can be seen anywhere. It's not necessary to travel to the Amazon or the Pacific plastic islands to see the damage. It's all around us.

So, these are not pretty pictures. They are pictures of scenes that should not exist, damage that should never have been done. The pictures are accompanied by my explanation of how we got into this state. I consider the history of the crisis, the mindset that allows this destruction, and I look forward to what seems inevitable and how we might change direction.

The extractive businesses that have ruled the world for the last 200 years and caused this destruction cannot be trusted with the future. People need to wake up to what is happening, get together and create change. This book is a contribution to that realisation.
