Aim
We are launching a scholarship for free places at each of our Phoenix Choirs - Leith, Central and Soul & Gospel for a full term!
The Phoenix Choir are now launching their choir scholarship - offering free spaces at their choirs for the coming Autumn term; there will be one space available at the Leith, Central and Soul & Gospel Choirs.
The scholarships are open to all but aimed to support those coming from financial hardships. We believe that singing is for absolutely everyone - the practice and action of singing itself is priceless, and so are the communities and friendships created when singing with other people - and the rewards of being part of something bigger than yourself! We want to open our doors to those for whom paying a weekly fee may be a financial barrier, so we are offering a number of spaces at our choirs through the scholarships.
The choirs meet weekly during term time, learning up-lifting soulful songs by ear each week - we're open to everyone and you don't need any previous experience to join the community choirs! There is an audition to join the Soul & Gospel Choir (more information attached below) but we teach all music by ear, meaning there is no sheet music to read.
We sing in 4-5 part harmonies and work towards performances towards the end of term - previous shows have included The Liquid Rooms, Usher Hall, St Giles Cathedral, Central Hall - and whilst we are sometimes featured in other events and shows, we often host our own performances! Our ethos is to get people singing, to have a lot of fun, and sing music with soul and passion.
There are 3 scholarship spaces available in total, in order to apply please contact [email protected] - the spaces are not means tested and no proof of financial position is required. Recipients of the scholarships must be 18+ and attend a minimum of 60% of rehearsals.

Leith - Mondays 7-9pm The Biscuit Factory EH6 5NP (community choir)
Central - Thursdays 6-8pm Summerhall EH9 1PL (community choir)
Soul & Gospel - Wednesdays 7-9pm St Columbas by the Castle (auditioned)
All choirs run weekly from the week commencing 11th Sept - 11th December 2023
(Soul & Gospel Choir auditions: we're looking for confident singers with a soulful sound and quality to their voice - the auditions are after a free choir session, where we ask you to sing back some notes from a piano to hear your pitching & range, clap back some rhythms, and then sing us one verse and chorus of any song of your choosing - but remember we're looking for soulful style! The funding covers:
1 x full term space at either Leith / Central / Soul & Gospel Choir
1 x Choir T-shirt (we wear for performances)
2 x Tickets to the choir's winter performance.
