Aim

Help Penzance Tennis Club upgrade their corroded halogen floodlights with modern, energy efficient LED ones

Who are we?

Penzance Tennis Club is a friendly, open environment, where everyone of any age or ability is welcomed to come and play or watch tennis at all levels, set in a beautiful park, close to the sea, with a cafe and bar open to the public.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We have 7 tennis courts and a mini court all of which have floodlights to enable them to be used year round.  Being so close to the sea is wonderful, but the salty atmosphere has corroded the old halogen floodlights and they need to be replaced now with energy efficient LED lights at a cost of around £50k.  We receive no grants for maintenance, so we have to raise the funds ourselves.  Sport, and the social aspects of our club, are so valuable for both physical and mental well being, Our wonderful club is run entirely by volunteers, who give up their time freely and generously.  We hope lots of people will support us by donating what they can.  Thank you to everyone who has helped us.

How we’ll spend the money raised

Every penny raised will be spent on installing new LED floodlights, which not only help save us money as they are much cheaper to run than outdated halogen ones, but are also better for the environment, as they use less energy to supply better illumination.   We hope to use the current columns, and just replace the heads of the 20 columns, at a cost of approximately £50k.  Due to our proximity to the coast, we intend adding anti-corrosion provisions to the lights in order to make them long lasting. 

Community impact

We attract players and spectators from a very wide area, not only those who live nearby, but many tourists and visitors love to visit our club.  Our cafe and bar has a South facing terrace overlooking the courts, giving everyone a view of players of all ages, abilities and origin.  Our two Open tournaments attract entrants from all over the UK, and we offer holiday membership to tourists, and have social tennis sessions 5 times a week, when everyone can just turn up and play in a fun and friendly way, without having to book a court in advance.  We have close associations with all local schools, have an active junior section, hold subsidised sessions for the disabled, walking tennis, rusty racquets, cardio tennis and more.  Our 4 men's teams and 4 ladies' teams enter the Cornwall league with great success.
