We aim to create a bee hive at our Community Garden, that will be run by vulnerable members of our community experiencing financial hardship
The idea of creating an apiary of bee hives at our Community Garden, was brought to us by a longstanding volunteer of our Street Food Project; Laurence.
Laurence started bee keeping during the pandemic, and whilst following the natural process of beekeeping was able to expand his 2 initial hives, to 14 hives, producing delicious honey and helping the environment around him.
With Laurence spearheading the project, we hope to be able to house a colony of bees at our Community Garden in Gulval. This will bring biodiversity to our garden, give more pollinators to the Penzance area, but also the opportunity for educational offerings to the vast number of volunteers who help at and visit our Community Garden on a daily basis.
Laurence will be working with his good friend Rowan who since the age of 16 has been homeless in Penzance and has been a guest at our Street Food Project for a number of years. After helping Laurence with the existing bee hives around Penwith, Laurence was struck by the way the bees helped calm Rowan and the responsibility gave him a sense of purpose. Something that he has been missing whilst living on the streets.
The aim of the Crowdfunder is to raise enough funds to put both Rowan & Laurence through a Bee Keeping course that starts in January 2023. Once qualified, the duo will bring their knowledge and skills to our Community Garden and will create an apiary, that will not only bring all the benefits of bees to the garden, but it will also provide both Rowan and Laurence with the confidence and self belief they need.
They will then help the Growing Links staff and volunteers to develop the garden around the needs of the bees.
The cost of the course for each individual is £250 for an 18 week course.
We hope that with our fantastic community of volunteers, we will be able to raise enough money to kick start this opportunity for Laurence and Rowan.
We hope to raise at least £250 so we can pay for Rowan's Bee Keeping course that starts in January for 18 weeks. It would be fantastic if we could also raise enough to also pay for Laurence's course fees.
Anything extra will be put towards PPE equipment, hives, seeds / equipment for the Community Garden to develop the garden around the needs of the bees.
For every donation we receive, your name will be inscribed on the hive so people can see your support.
