Aim

SOS-Save our Stand. The Cornish weather has been attacking the structure of our stands but we are fighting back with steel, paint and muscle

Who are we?

We were the first rugby club in Cornwall and was founded in 1872. Since that time, we have grown to have all teams in each age grade from age 6 right through to adults (boys, girls, men and women). We have over 200 youth grade players (including a Colts team), over 100 players in the men’s and women’s teams, numerous community groups using our facilities and between 500 – 1000 supporters on match days. We are run by and maintained by a team of dedicated volunteers who spend a lot of time keeping everything going at The Borough.  We also have local community groups using our facilities regularly and on an ad hoc basis.

Our vision is for the Borough to be a leading amateur club in Cornwall by promoting "The Borough Way" and our "One Club" ethos making everyone welcome. Penryn is one of Cornwall's most ancient towns receiving its charter as a borough in 1236, giving rise to the nickname "The Borough" being used for the rugby club. We are continually looking at how we can improve our facilities to make them more accessible for all including those with physical and learning disabilities which is also our aim for improving the stands and toilet facilities.

 Why are we crowdfunding?

All grassroots clubs are struggling to not just maintain their facilities but also modernise and refurbish them. We love our club but we need financial help to carry out a series of works - not just the basic works needed to stop the stand from falling down but also to refresh various other aspects of our club to make it a club to be proud of.

Initially, we need to Save Our Stand which is the only seated area under cover for supporters to watch our games. Unfortunately, the Cornish weather has been attacking the structure and we need to complete work to ensure it is structurally sound and will be there for many years to come. We have a team of volunteers who have already made a start but we need help to pay for everything such as continuing to hire scaffolding or buying paint.

Once we have ensured our stand is safe, we will then start work on our toilet facilities, clubhouse and changing rooms – all of which are desperate for an upgrade to not just make them more welcoming but also to make them futureproof.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We need to continue to hire the scaffolding so our volunteers can do the works safely, purchase some steel purlins, rust prevention treatment/sealant and then paint.

If we have any money left over from the SOS, we will use it on refurbishing our toilets, clubhouse and changing rooms so every penny raised will be used on upgrading our buildings to make them more accessible and welcoming.

Community impact

Having a covered seated area is a fantastic facility which enables supporters with mobility problems to have a really good view of the game regardless of the weather and to really soak up the atmosphere. On game days, we have between 500 – 1000 supporters and the stands are always well used.

Any money raised over and above that needed for the stands will be used to upgrade our clubhouse and toilets to ensure they are a clean, welcoming environment for not just our players but also the various community groups who are using our facilities. On youth match days, we will have around 400 people (children and adults) using our clubhouse so the impact of this crowdfunder is vast.

How you can play your part
