To bring to life a young female children's character fascinated by sport to meet female role models within a variety of sports...
Until I met my now wife (a Geordie), I had no idea that the cheap, plastic footballs that move all over the place when kicked were described in some parts of the UK as 'penny floaters'. I'd personally always called them 'flyaways'.
Anyway, at the time I said to my wife that 'Penny Floater' would be a great name for a children's character - a young girl with a cheap plastic football who would kick it and then see it float off somewhere for her to enouncter some form of adventure.
Female participation in sport is rightly getting increasing exposure these days, on the back of the successes of the English football team, the English cricket team winning the World Cup, the likes of Jo Konta establishing herself as genuinely 'world class' in the tennis world, Jessica Ennis and how inspirational she is, etc, etc. The result is that more and more young girls are finally seeing female role models in sport, rather than having to watch men competing professionally. I took my 4 year old daughter to the women's FA Cup final at Wembley a few months ago - she was surprised by the fact that you ould go and watch women play football. Things like that need to change.
I don't intend to go into much more detail here as I'm conscious that your time is precious. That said, I do think that a children's character who is a young girl, encountering female role models in a variety of different sports could be a huge success given the current standing of female sport, the increasing levels on participation and the huge push for children to be more active.
The funds I am seeking are to assist in turning Penny Floater from a concept in my mind into a reality on paper (in the form of children's books) and perhaps even beyond. My intention with the funds would be to engage a creative consultant/illustrator to create the appropriate images to begin to move things forward.
