Pedal-Powered Cinema for Frome
We did it
On 8th July 2015 we successfully raised £1,736 with 67 supporters in 35 days

A pedal-powered film under the stars in Victoria Park, Frome, to help raise money for the Missing Links cycle paths

by Helen_J in Frome

 New stretch target

If we reach this figure, we can be sure of raising a good sum of money for Frome's Missing Link. Also, as many of the people we are working with will only take a fee for their professional skills once we have reached our break even point, stretch funding will ensure we can pay them properly. Any extra will go to the cycle path project - they need to raise £20,000 in total for this stage.

Project aim

A celebration of cycling and a pedal-powered showing of Ghostbusters under the stars in Victoria Park, Frome, to help build the Missing Link cycle path

About the project

Our Crowdfunding stage is now over and tickets will be on sale from Friday 10th July in Frome Wholefoods!

Read more about the project below.

To create a traffic-free cycle path from the centre of Frome to the Colliers Way route, which leads to Radstock, £20,000 needs to be raised from the local community to get the next stage completed. We want to help - but we'd like to have fun and celebrate cycling too!

So, we are bringing pedal-powered cinema to Frome this summer on Saturday 18th July. You'll be able to picnic in Victoria Park, watching a family friendly movie on the pedal-powered screen as dusk falls and the stars come out. We're also planning to have an early film showing for children, at around 6pm, inside a tent and there will be food for sale (provided by Lungi Babas), popcorn, a bike 'wash', a raffle and information on the project at the event.

Now that we have met our initial funding target, we are confident we can cover the basic costs of the event. However, if we are going to raise some money for the Missing Links, we still need to sell more tickets. So please,  pledge some money or buy your ticket now, so that we can help build this fantastic cycle route.

Who's organising this?

A small team of people from Sustainable Frome is working hard on the arrangements now. Frome's Missing Link (FML) is part of Sustainable Frome, and the FML team is working with us, and looking for other ways to raise funds. The Frome Film Club is also getting involved, helping out with their experience and knowledge. 1st and 7th Frome Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have very kindly offered their tent for the children's showing. And we have the backing of our supportive town council - Mayor Kate Bielby has even offered to get on a bike and help us power the movie!

How does it work?

Some questions keep cropping up, so here are a few points about the event:

  • You don't need a lot of people pedalling to keep the screen powered, but we'll have around 6 - 8 bicycles to make sure there it is a top quality screening.
  • The film will start at around 9pm, as that is when it gets dark enough for you to see the screen.
  • Yes, you will be able to buy tickets from local shops - as soon as we can get some printed - we'll keep you up-to-date here and at the Sustainable Frome website.
  • Yes, you'll be able to bring your own food and drink, and picnic blankets. You'll be able to sit pretty much where you like, but we'd ask that those on haybales or chairs keep to the sides of the area to allow everyone to see.
  • Yes, we'll still go ahead if it rains. If it looks like heavy or persistent rain, we have plans to set up the screen and bikes in a hall. We haven't confirmed details of this yet, so will have to tell you more later. Unfortunately, it might mean we have to cancel the children's film screening in a tent (the logistics make it difficult to do both).
  • The picture above (courtesy of Electric Pedals) is not Frome - this will be the first cinema screening of its kind in the town!

About the rewards

The main part of the rewards is a ticket to the event. If you are going in a group, you might want to opt for a number of single-ticket pledges.

To help us raise more money from the event, we're also offering some excellent extras to make the experience all the more delightful. How about a haybale to sit on? or a tiffin box (a small card container of snacks), made by Lungi Babas? If you haven't tried their excellent snacks, visit the Loop de Loop Gallery in the Market Yard on Wednesday to Friday lunchtimes - the food is really delicious! We are also creating some souvenir items - which will have to be a surprise for now (but our principles are to find Fair Trade, organic and durable items).

Can't make it on the night but still want to help? You can pledge your support as a donation - any sum accepted.

About the cycle-powered cinema

The set-up we have for the movie will be provided by Electric Pedals, who do a huge range of cycle-powered entertainment options - they are an experienced and professional crew. We will only need around 6 - 8 cycles - not as many as in the picture above - and keeping the number of cycles down helps us keep the costs down. If we sell a lot of tickets, however, we do have the option to upgrade to a bigger set-up.

Not everyone will need to cycle. If you want to cycle, you may have to take a turn, as there will be quite a few people who'd like to give it a go and we will try to let as many people as possible get involved. So we'd better have a film that doesn't require close attention! (no subtitles, for sure!)
