Aim

Plymouth & District Rugby Combination aim is to enable as many Primary School Children to have the opportunity to play T1 Rugby at school.

Plymouth & District Rugby Combination (P&DRC) has been working closely over the summer period with the England RFU, Devon RFU, Plymouth City Council and Active Devon with a goal to keep the the Girls & Women’s legacy project alive beyond November 2025 when the funding is due to end.

The project was established following the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, with the aim to introduces T1 Rugby (non-contact) to primary school children aged 6–12, with a particular focus on encouraging girls to become active and involved in rugby and sport. Sessions are delivered within schools and school time, creating an accessible pathway from schools into local community clubs.

The project (Phase 1) has already demonstrated significant impact funded by the RFU. The original target was to reach 1,800 girls across Plymouth and surrounding areas between November 2025 and November 2026 (PHASE 1). By May 2026, participation had already exceeded this target at 1,830, with approximately 2,500 children expected to be reached by November 2026. Local community clubs have also reported an approximate 20% increase in girls playing rugby, demonstrating a clear pathway from schools into community sport.

P&DRC have been requested and being supported to deliver the next phase. Therefore we are seeking funding to continue the programme from November 2026 to May 2027 (PHASE 2) and maintain this momentum. We are looking to raise £10,000 of funding this will contribute towards an RFU qualified community coach, equipment, transport, administration and coordination.

PHASE 3 will be seasons 2027/28 & PHASE 4 season 2028/29. This approach will allow us to grow the game and the programme and take it all the way through to the next Women's Rugby World Cup in 2029 held in Australia showing true legacy from one event to another, this was always "The Big Aim"of World Rugby and Plymouth has a real chance to do this.

During this time there also a number of high profile rugby events across the world. Including the very first British & Irish Lions - Women's Rugby Tour to New Zealand in 2027, and yes of course the Men's Rugby World Cup 2027 held in Australia. All of these world sport events help encourage children to play sport. So to help children access these sports. Plymouth & District Rugby Combination wishes to keep the Girls & Women’s legacy project alive and within the Primary School setting as it means the game of rugby can and will stay fully inclusive.
