Trigger warning - some gory pics of Pan's wound before, during and after surgery at the end of his story.
Poor Pan was bitten by a dog while minding his own business enjoying a walk in the woods with his fav human (me). The wound sadly got super infected, which resulted in him having his declaw amputated, along with some extra bone, a load of soft tissue and skin. It was a pretty awful time.
Pan post surgery
There wasn't enough skin left to sew the wound back up. This has meant making trips to the vet 2-3 times a week to get his wound redressed since his surgery 3rd Sept 2024. The infection got so bad at one pint, he risked further surgery and amputation, which was terrifying. He has now been on three lots of different antibiotics, which have finally got the infection under control, but they have been upsetting his stomach and making him sick.
It's been quite a miserable time for wee Pan and he has very much lost his spark. It has also been rather stressful and traumatic for his human. He finds the trips to the vets super scary and traumatic, but he has coped so well. Proud dog moma.
Sad scared Pan post trip to the vets
It is heartbreaking to see him so sad and miserable, as he is the liveliest, silliest most expressive dog with a big personality. Anyone who has met Pan knows he is quite the quirky little character.
Pan having a happier time pre-dog bite
So far this whole ordeal has cost £1500 and it's not over yet. We have another month or so of weekly visits to the vets until the wound has completely healed, which will involve further costs.
Pan is insured, but he already maxed out his annual allowance when he had cruciate ligament surgery earlier this year - not a good year for poor Pan.
This has meant having to pay his vet bills myself. I don't have the funds for this, so I have just had to stick it all on my credit card with no way of being able to pay it off anytime soon, which is super stressful as the interest rate is so high.
I realise everyone is feeling the effects of the cost of living crisis the past few years, myself included. So please share far and wide with any kind generous wealthy dog lovers you might know out there to help pay Pan's vet bills.
Thank you for your support.
Peace and love,
Elaine and Pan
