Bring a leading environmental storyteller to York to inspire community action for cleaner, safer, swimmable rivers.
York’s rivers are at the heart of the city - shaping its history, communities and daily life. But concerns about water quality and pollution are growing, and many people feel disconnected from the river as a safe, shared space.
Ouse It or Lose It is a grassroots community bringing people back to the River Ouse - through swimming, storytelling, and collective action.
On 30 May, as part of York Festival of Ideas, we’re hosting “York’s Rivers: Place, Space and People” at Clements Hall - a community event bringing together swimmers, residents, local groups and experts to explore our relationship with the river and what needs to change. We'll be showing the brilliant film Rave on for the Avon to help galvanise action.
We want this to be more than a conversation - we want it to spark momentum.
That’s why we’ve invited a number of speakers to join us. We believe in fairly paying brilliant, self-employed creatives for their time and expertise. At the same time, we are committed to keeping this event affordable, inclusive and accessible - which is why we’re raising funds to pay our creatives fairly.
This is about building something bigger — a shared vision for cleaner, safer, more accessible rivers in York, and a step towards becoming a swimmable city.
