Shinty is more than just a sport. It’s a legacy.
Rooted in the Scottish Highlands for over two millennia, Shinty is a fiercely physical stick-and-ball game played with unrivaled passion. Fast, brutal (Not Really), and beautiful, it remains one of the oldest continually played sports in the world.

But Shinty isn’t just about the clash of camans (sticks). It’s about tradition, identity, and resilience. In isolated glens, rugged coastlines, and tight-knit villages, the game survives – and thrives – as a living bridge between Scotland’s past and present.

Despite its rich heritage, Shinty is often overlooked – even within Scotland. Mainstream sports dominate media coverage, funding, and cultural conversation. But Shinty continues, passed down through generations by word of mouth, community pride, and unrelenting spirit. With a world so connected, it is time to be able to share this sport to the wider audience.

In this short documentary that aims to preserve, promote, and celebrate the essence of this extraordinary sport. We’ll dive deep into the lives of the players, coaches, and all the people behind making this sport run.

This film is not just about gameplay – it’s about the people who carry Shinty forward, and the legacy left behind.

This sport also has a special place in my heart, being a foreigner to the United Kingdom and being able to experience this culture of sport. I feel that it is my time to contribute and to be able to help preserve and share the passion.

We want to shine a light on:

1. The history of Shinty, from its Celtic roots to its role in Gaelic culture
2. The stories of modern players balancing rural life, work, and their love of the game.
3. The communities that come together around each match – from the Hebrides to the Highlands. The spirit of endurance, sportsmanship, and fierce loyalty that defines Shinty.

This project will be a visually striking, emotionally resonant, and culturally rich short film. It will capture the beauty of the sport in action, intercut with personal narratives and authentic landscapes to promote heritage.

1754994768_fundinggoal.pngOur funding goal covers most of what we need to bring documentary to life — including filming across Scotland, equipment rental, post-production, music, festivals to ensure that we can spread the word and backer rewards. It also accounts for platform fees and a small contingency. Every pound will go toward capturing the spirit and legacy of this historic sport in the highest possible quality.

1754994780_plans.pngWe hope to share this film with as many people as we can, while being able to showcase the sport internationally through film festivals, community screenings and a lot of work to showcasing the sport, every step in this film is to ensure we can share this sport.
