The City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS): At the Heart of Peterborough’s Sporting Legacy
The City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) stands as a beacon of resilience, excellence, and community spirit, cementing its place as a vital part of Peterborough’s sports community fabric. Despite facing significant challenges, most notably the closure of its home pool in November 2024, COPS has continued to thrive, delivering exceptional results, inspiring its members, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and sustainability.
A Club Built on Community
Since its start, in 1936, COPS is a community-driven organisation. The club prioritizes inclusivity, offering tailored squads to meet the needs of swimmers of all ages and abilities. Regular feedback sessions, open communication, and a focus on member well-being foster a strong sense of belonging.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of COPS, and their contributions are celebrated through awards, appreciation events, and recognition initiatives. Recent “Splash Nights” have successfully attracted new volunteers, ensuring the club’s continued success at competitions and events.
Thriving in the Face of Adversity
The loss of the Regional Swimming Pool could have been a devastating blow to the club, but COPS’ commitment to excellence turned this challenge into an opportunity for growth. Under the extraordinary leadership of Head Coach Ben Negus, the club not only survived but continued to deliver success in the pool and develop mature young adults with strong characters and responsibilities.

His ability to adapt and lead in times of uncertainty has transformed the performance environment at COPS, creating a culture where athletes not only meet challenges but exceed expectations.
A Coaching Legacy of Excellence
Ben’s leadership extends beyond competition. As a Swim England Coach Mentor and a National Pathway Coach, he shares his expertise with the wider swimming community, ensuring that COPS remains at the forefront of innovation and best practices in coaching. His efforts to mentor fellow coaches, both within the club and at partner organisations, have strengthened the region’s coaching talent pool, further cementing COPS’ role as a leader in swimming development.
Advocating for the Future
The closure of the Regional Swimming Pool has highlighted the critical need for a state-of-the-art swimming facility in Peterborough. COPS has taken a proactive role in this conversation, working with local councils, media, and community groups to raise awareness of the benefits a new pool would bring to the city. Beyond supporting the club, such a facility would enhance public health, boost local tourism, and solidify Peterborough’s reputation as a hub for sporting excellence
Sustainability at the Forefront
COPS is committed to building a sustainable future. The club operates paperlessly, promotes carpooling among members, and opts for eco-friendly travel solutions, such as shared transport to national events. These initiatives not only reduce environmental impact but also foster a sense of collective responsibility among members.
A Vision for Growth and Excellence
COPS is more than a swimming club; it is a cornerstone of Peterborough’s sports community, inspiring athletes, supporting families, and advocating for a brighter future. Through financial sustainability, innovative coaching, and a deep connection to its members, COPS continues to deliver excellence while championing the city’s wider goals.
The challenges of recent years have only strengthened the club’s resolve. As COPS continues to grow and achieve new milestones, it remains a shining example of what a dedicated community can achieve, no matter the obstacles.
