During my research for the Leith Whisky Trail, I discovered more about the infamous Pattison brothers.
By the second half of the 1800s, the brothers' business, based throughout Leith, had become immense. Consequently, its collapse in 1898 changed the landscape of the Scotch whisky industry from then on.
However, the story of the Pattisons as people, rather than a business, is equally, if not even more, compelling.
Over the years, my interest in the Pattisons grew from genuine enthusiasm into outright obsession! To the point where I traced their entire family tree; tracking down and meeting with some of their relatives. The wealth of information generously provided by them has led me to collate this into a book.
This has by no means been an easy task as both the business and the family relationships formed an enormous, intricate web. Even so, it was one that was definitely worth unravelling.
Based on extensive research over the course of four years, "Opening The Case: The Affairs of Pattisons' Whisky" focuses on the twelve years from 1890 to 1902. For too long, the Pattison name has only ever been used to shoulder the blame for the inevitable end of Scotch whisky’s golden era. Now, it's time to move beyond the name and uncover the Pattisons’ true characters and stories.
And what cracking stories they have to tell!
