The OneCity Trust was established in 2003, as a result of the Lord Provost of Edinburgh’s Commission on Social Exclusion, with its aim to promote social inclusion and equality in the City of Edinburgh.
Like many major cities across the UK, Edinburgh continues to have substantial social challenges, with engrained poverty, inequality, and disadvantage, both within and across our communities:
• some 22% of all households in the city live on incomes below the poverty threshold;
• 22% of city children are growing up experiencing poverty with some areas showing up to 30%;
• 18% of all households in the city cannot afford the essentials of life in the UK today; the cost to tax-payers of child poverty in Edinburgh amounts to £156 million per year (according to the Child Poverty Action Group);
• 24% (53,600 households) of all Edinburgh households continue to experience fuel poverty; and
• sadly, and as a direct result of our sustaining poverty levels, 46 food banks have opened since 2014.
The last few years have been tough for everyone; the impact of the COVID19 pandemic, which had devastating effects on the economy, business and personal wellbeing, followed by the cost of living crisis.
On 2 November 2023, the City of Edinburgh Council (the Council) officially declared a housing emergency within the city. As a result, 2024 will see the Trust concentrate on funding projects across the city under the theme, “Enriching the Lives of people impacted by the housing crisis”
The OneCity Trust encourages community collaboration and is therefore dependent on the support of all of our citizens.
Can you help us to form strong partnerships with organisations to fund and deliver high impact, sustainable projects that will break down the barriers that leave excluded groups on the outskirts of society. Edinburgh should no longer be a divided city but OneCity.
Our website www.onecitytrust.com details the projects we have been able to support over the years and hopefully with your support, continue to do so for many more years to come.
