I've been given an incredible opportunity to take my nursing skills beyond borders and make a real impact on healthcare in a global setting!

by Sandra Shawcross in Derby, England, United Kingdom

As a second-year student nurse at Derby University, I have been selected as part of a team to work voluntarily in hospitals and outreach centres in Nepal, a third-world country, still reeling from the aftermath of devastating earthquakes and struggling with limited healthcare resources.

Travelling to Nepal as a student nurse will be an amazing opportunity and life changing experience. This journey would allow me to immerse myself in a healthcare system vastly different from our own here in the UK, learning firsthand how medical professionals provide care in challenging conditions with limited resources.

Within the hospitals, I will gain invaluable hands-on experience across various departments, including emergency care, where I will develop my clinical skills in a fast-paced environment.

I am particularly passionate about palliative care, and I look forward to learning more about it in a third-world country setting, where I can understand the unique challenges faced by patients and their families.

In the outreach centres, we will be supporting mothers during the pre- and post-natal stages, providing essential care and ensuring they receive the best possible support for a safe and healthy journey into motherhood. Additionally, we will be working with undernourished children, providing care and support to improve their health and well-being.

This experience will not only allow me to contribute to communities in need but also help strengthen my compassion, resilience, broaden my understanding of global health, cultural competence and holistic patient care in diverse environments as well as grow into a more skilled, adaptable, and compassionate nurse allowing me to provide better care for my future patients.

While this is a university-led initiative supported by Projects Abroad, we are each individually responsible for raising some of our own funds to make this journey possible. I cannot express enough how much it would mean to me to receive support from those who believe in this journey. Your generosity wouldn’t just be helping me, it would be helping every patient I will one day care for. Every bit of support, no matter the size, would be a gift that fuels my passion and brings me one step closer to this incredible learning experience. I would carry your kindness with me, not just to Nepal, but into my future as a nurse, always remembering the people who helped make this possible. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering being part of this journey with me.
