Crowdfund £14k to replace our two artificial grass tennis courts which are no longer fit for purpose, to provide the best courts in Nuneaton
by Ryan Forrest in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, United Kingdom
Nuneaton Lawn Tennis Club was formed in 1898 and is the last remaining LTA registered tennis club in Nuneaton. We have 2 Astroturf courts and 3 Tarmac courts, all of which are floodlit and a clubhouse with changing and shower facilities. We are a welcoming friendly and inclusive club with over 200 members.

We offer:
• A high standard of competitive league tennis
• Weekly social tennis sessions
• A thriving junior tennis section
• Regular social/family sessions
• Coaching for all ages and abilities
• Open days for new players
• Social events throughout the year such as quizzes and an annual Christmas Meal
In 2020 we were awarded Tennis Club of the Year by the Warwickshire LTA.
We have coaching for juniors of all ages and abilities. Also we place a high priority on supporting juniors and ensuring they enjoy their tennis. We run a popular and successful junior night session every Friday evening, averaging 30 children, which includes themed nights – Christmas, Halloween, Pancakes, etc. We also work with local schools to offer them tennis sessions as part of their curriculum. In particular we have a local special needs school which we work with each year. For all school sessions we make no charge for our courts or facilities – the only charges are to cover the cost of any coaching provided. We are also a member of the Nuneaton & Bedworth Sports Forum.
We’ve extended our membership over the years with a number of initiatives to engage with the local community, including ‘Fun, Fit, Female’, ‘Parent & Child’ and ‘Tennis Express’ courses.
In 2020 and 2021 the Covid pandemic hit our finances. No tennis or social events were possible in lockdown and additionally we were operating under severe restrictions for long periods. This led to us having to reduce our membership fees to compensate members for the periods where no tennis was possible. However we are now looking forward to a new membership year without disruption and where we can restore our social events and build our membership. However we have 2 serious financial challenges:
• Our 2 x Artificial Grass courts are 12 years old and are suffering from drainage problems. They are getting very slippery and dangerous in wet weather. The only solution is a complete resurface of these 2 courts at a cost of around £55,000 to make them safe.
• We renewed our stop netting on one side of the courts this year from our membership funds. However the other side of the courts now urgently needs replacing at a cost of around £15,000.
To ensure we have a viable tennis club that can thrive and attract new members we must have courts that can safely be used all year round and in all conditions. The Astroturf courts are regularly used by all members including adults for competitive matches and social tennis for families and juniors. Additionally we have a number of older members that are able to continue playing into the 70s and even 80s due to the cushioning effect of the Astroturf courts.
The club is well run financially by a dedicated and motivated committee and for many years we have been saving for the time when we need to resurface courts. However we can see that we are going to have a shortfall on the funds needed to complete both the above projects.
Nuneaton Tennis Club needs your help to raise the required funds to complete the above projects. We are the only remaining LTA accredited tennis club in the Nuneaton area and we would want to ensure that we will be there for the junior tennis players from future generations.
We are working hard to raise as much as possible and your help would really be appreciated to give us that extra push to transform our courts and facilities. So please donate as much as you can and help us deliver the above projects this year. If we are successful in our Crowd Funding objective of £7,000 then Sport England will support us with a ‘match fund’ grant of a further £7,000. This should enable us to complete both the above projects this year.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games will shine a light on Birmingham and the West Midlands, putting our vibrant region on a global stage. At Nuneaton LTC, we can relate to the Birmingham 2022. We want to Bring People Together and champion the youth and diversity of our region. Nuneaton LTC encourage new members from across the town And surrounding area. Naturally, we Improve Health and Wellbeing of all of our members, putting on a wide ranging social and physical calendar. This money will be a Catalyst For Change at our club, providing brand new, top class all weather tennis courts. Everyone at Nuneaton Lawn Tennis Club looks forward to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
