On the 5th May 2023 we'd raised £2,070 with 32 supporters in 46 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
Extra money will be used to invest in NPN. This includes saving for future magazine issues, building a website, and having professional photographs taken.
We are a print and online zine (magazine) for Black and People of Colour (BPoC) in Scotland. NPN aims to platform BPoC culture, creativity, and experiences, by providing space outside of the dominant arts/media landscape.
NPN was born in 2021 as part of a project with the anti-racist charity Intercultural Youth Scotland (IYS). With IYS we published our first issue 'We, Me, Us'. In September 2022, NPN relaunched as an independent zine, and has grown into a collective of nearly 20 individuals, collaborating to bring this magazine to life.
Our zine is distributed across Glasgow and Edinburgh and is free for anyone to pick up. NPN’s ultimate vision is to foster meaningful community and networks of support. By strengthening our community through mutual support, we believe it can create inter-community change which then better equips us to create wider change for BPoC in Scotland.
NPN is crowdfunding for the launch of 'Scott(ish)', our first print issue as an independent zine. 'Scott(ish)' launches in May 2023, and explores what it looks, means, and feels like to be BPoC in Scotland. Through essays, interviews, poetry and art, we want to expand the Scottish identity, so that it goes beyond kilts, irn-bru, haggis, and shortbread. While the latter are all valid (who doesn’t like a bit of shortbread?!), it isn’t inclusive of BPoC who often have multiple cultures and places of origin. This issue of NPN is an act of taking up space – of saying, ‘we exist, we matter’. It bears witness to BPoC self-articulating creativity, culture, and injustices through healing mediums of art.
NPN is a zine by our community for our community, so of course the graphic design will be done by incredible BPoC creatives!
True to NPN’s mission, our launch event will showcase and support our community, with performances from BPoC artists, as well as stall space for Scotland-based artists and businesses to present their work. This will mark the first of many NPN community events!
We will use the money raised to cover venue-hire costs, pay the DJ and performers, and magazine graphic designers.
