For the first time, a collection of Anatoly Movshevich’s poetry and prose has been translated into English - by award winning poet Peter Daniels and celebrated translator Nicholas Pasternak Slater. The collection, illustrated with art by Christopher Moody, brings together writings from throughout Anatoly’s career as well as some that have never before been published in any language. The book is called ‘Nobody’s Time’.
In ‘Nobody’s Time’ poetry, prose and dramatic scenes all complement each other, creating a picture of the narrator’s life. Short stories take place in different historical eras and different parts of Russia – from the 1960s to the present; from countryside near Moscow to industrial Dzerzhinsk. The narrator feels deep nostalgia for the time that never belonged to him and longs to see places which are out of reach. Then his life turns around, he can travel and something unexpected happens; while sitting by the Thames he daydreams of the Nara river near Moscow and finds himself within his own time at last.
As Anatoly says, ‘Like many other poets who lived in that time, I was captivated by world culture and tried to find its representations, no matter how small, in my day-to-day life in my provincial town. Sometimes even an empty leafy yard could suddenly lead to an imaginary Italian square. In my head it was more real than most of the things that surrounded me at the time. In this way ‘Nobody’s Time’ is not only a record of Soviet intelligentsia. It is an exploration of how cultural identity endures and how art and poetry can help us to survive, sometimes in unexpected ways, in the most turbulent times.’
We believe that the book has the potential to enrich the lives of its readers and would love it to reach as many people as possible. Your support would be very much appreciated.
