To create the UK’s first Fish Forest by restoring woodland around Cornwall’s estuaries to support seas, fish and people. No Trees No Seas.
Earlier this year we launched No Trees No Seas, a campaign exploring the connection between forests and the ocean. What began as a local idea quickly gained national attention and opened conversations with organisations, public bodies and brands who recognised the importance of reconnecting land and sea.
Now we want to turn that vision into action.
Our goal is to help create the UK’s first Fish Forest in Cornwall — a concept already recognised by fishing communities and conservationists in Japan, where there is an ancient saying:
“If you want to catch a fish, plant a tree.”
The idea is simple: forests, rivers and seas are one connected flowscape. Woodland upstream filters pollution, stabilises soil and delivers nutrients that support plankton, seagrass and kelp — the foundation of marine ecosystems. Coastal woodland also creates sheltered nursery habitats for young fish, similar to mangroves in tropical environments.
Cornwall is the perfect place to pioneer this approach. Its estuaries and tidal rias are vital breeding grounds for marine life and its fishing heritage is nationally important, yet these ecosystems are increasingly under pressure from climate change and habitat loss.
The money raised through this crowdfunder will fund a dedicated Woodland Officer to work directly with landowners, communities and volunteers to:
This role is essential because creating a Fish Forest depends on long-term relationships, practical support and community participation.
By supporting the No Trees No Seas campaign, you will help create a pioneering model for restoring nature from source to sea — reconnecting people, forests and oceans in a way that could inspire coastal communities across the UK.
