Encouraging independent political action in the summer to save Sheffield street trees.
CROWDFUNDING TARGET (in the next two weeks): £ 750.00
There are many positives at the moment in the Sheffield trees campaign.
✔ Due mostly to the 'stand under trees' tactics employed by tree campaigners, Sheffield City Council (SCC) and Amey have been forced to pause tree felling in our city for almost two months.
✔ Cllr Bryan Lodge has been forced out as trees supremo.
✔ New revelations of SCC mismanagement and financial skulduggery come out almost daily in the media.
✔ The 3rd May elections went very badly for Labour in areas of Sheffield where resistance to tree felling has been strongest.
✔ Many Labour Party members and groups are up in arms over what their local Labour-controlled council has done to the environmental heritage of our city. And they’ve passed many motions to express their opposition.
✔ And more and more people who live outside Sheffield are asking, "what the heck is going on in your city?"
BUT --- and it is a big but! --- council leader Julie Dore and Amey have not given up. Not by a long shot.
Dore continues to believe the PFI contract has been a good deal for Sheffield.
SCC have not agreed to the mediated talks with tree campaigners that Labour Party politicians across the city and right up to Jeremy Corbyn's own shadow environment minister stated months ago were the only way forward.
And recently, Dore attempted to send four tree campaigners to prison and, as of today (20th June), huge possible legal costs loom against them.
As for Amey, it has not even begun to face up to the corporate vandalism it has committed on OUR street trees since 2013.
So while summer is usually the time to go to the beach, to have a natter with your friends at a barbecue, to watch the World Cup (at least this summer), we are today --- on the first day of summer --- launching “NO STUMP CITY IN THE SUMMER."
And while we plan to get some beach time in ourselves, we think the next two months provide Sheffield tree campaigners with an excellent opportunity to take our pro-trees messages out across South Yorkshire and to reach new audiences: younger people, the BME community, LGBT Sheffield, people who live in areas of Sheffield where trees were unnecessarily felled 3-4 years ago.
To reach them, we have now selected 8-10 summer events and festivals across South Yorkshire. At some, we may rent stalls.
We are in the process of printing another 5,000 copies of our very popular 'Snakes and Ladders' brochure; it is being slightly revised and updated. And we are working hard on a range of campaigning projects – ranging from videos to blimps -- that we will be rolling out between now and 1 September.
The budget we have set for ‘NO STUMP CITY IN THE SUMMER’ is £1450.00. Before we even kicked off this fund-raising campaign, three No Stumpers had already donated £700.00.
Please help us raise the remaining £750.00 in the next two weeks. Every tenner helps. The donation box is on the right.
And then also join us out ON THE STUMP talking to fellow Sheffielders.
