Nigerian IDP Diaspora Support Group (NIDSG) is a UK regulated charity, founded in 2017 by Nigerian diaspora and friends of Nigeria, driven by a strong moral obligation to help. We deliver interventions in Maternal and Child Health and Mental Health to support two populations: • People in conflict areas, those living in displacement (IDP) camps and Communities, who have been impacted by insurgency by Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa (ISWAP), Herder-Farmer conflicts and widespread killing, kidnapping and banditry, mainly in northern Nigeria and the middle belt • Healthcare improvement, mainly through upskilling poorly trained primary health workers in medically underserved rural areas across the whole of Nigeria, to better serve their communities

NIDSG is a UK based charity, staffed mainly by unpaid volunteer Nigerian medical professionals in diaspora. We are immensley proud in the huge impact made in mental health and pscho-social support (MHPSS) and maternal and child health (MCH) to support conflict affected and medically underserved populations.

MCH: Nigeria accounts for around 28.5% of all maternal deaths worldwide [source: WHO] about 200 women die in childbirth every day, from largely preventable complications. Improving the quality of care in child birth is one of the most impactful ways of reducing maternal and newborn deaths. Our programe has trained nearly 2500 midwives, nurses and doctors in medically underserved areas, in BEmONC. We've also delivered free medical treatment clinics and medicines for over 2000 pregnant women and children in IDP (refugee) camps and arranged life-saving follow-up in-hospital treatment for critically ill patents and donate free NHS surplus medical equipment and supplies to local hospitals and IDP clinics.

MHPSS: There is a mental health crisis in Nigeria, yet the country has only has about 250 psychiatrists for a population of 200m people, and the mental health care is a chronically and dangerously under-resourced. About half of the 3m people displaced by conflict are suffering from trauma, depression and associated mental health issues. NIDSG has trained 400 lay Mental Health Counsellors, and supports and mentors counsellors from conflict areas and rural populations with no mental health services. Our Tally Trip Child Trauma Programme help children suffering from PTSD across Nigeria. We've also deployed NIDSG trained volunteers to provide psychological first aid to victims of attacks in communities in the Nigerian middle belt.
