NIDSG

RCN 1191702,

NIDSG provides trauma counselling support for conflict victims of Boko Haram in Nigeria – women children and families who are displaced, and traumatised by kidnapping, rape, and witnessing brutal torture and killings. We also deliver medical clinics for women and children in affected communities.

NIDSG

Since 2009, conflict with Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa (ISWAP), and insurgency in Northern Nigeria and the Lake Chad Region, has resulted in a staggering death toll, nearly 40,000 lives lost. Tragically, numerous women and girls have been kidnapped, raped and children coerced into joining the armed groups. UNHCR estimates that there are 3 million internally displaced people (IDPs), many of whom are children. The situation for IDPs is dire. Forced to endure terrible living conditions in overcrowded IDP camps and informal communities, with little or no basic services. Many suffer from trauma and other mental health issues.

Nigerian IDP Diaspora Support Group (NIDSG) is a UK regulated charity, founded in 2017 by individuals of Nigerian origin residing abroad and friends of Nigeria, who saw the plight of internally displaced people (IDPs), and were driven by a strong moral obligation to help the victims.

We take immense pride in the positive impact we’ve made on the people affected, in two areas: mental health and pscho-social support (MHPSS) and maternal and child health (MCH):

A. MHPSS: We've trained approximately 200 lay adult mental trauma counsellors and lay therapeutic art trauma counsellors for children, to support victims of conflict, and some of our lay counsellors have received National Awards in Nigeria for  outstanding work. About half of the 3m IDPs who fled their homes due to conflict are suffering from trauma and side effects of displacement such as depression. This has been described as a time bomb, if left untreated will “threaten the future of the country.”

B. MCH: Our maternal health and child health clinics have saves lives and provides essential medical care to about 800 children and pregnant women in IDP communities. Alongside this, our capacity building effort trains local health workers to help reduce deaths in childbirth (Nigeria accounts for over 20% of worldwide deaths in childbirth, with up to 200 women dying every day).
