Nico's Half Marathon

Dear Friends,

On May 19th, I'll be embarking on a journey that goes beyond mere miles - it's a journey of compassion, understanding, and community. I'll be running the Bristol Half Marathon in support of Bridges for Communities, a charity that holds a vision of a society where people of different cultures, races, and faiths not only coexist but thrive together.

At Bridges, their mission is clear: to build kinder, fairer, and more welcoming communities in Bristol, while also inspiring and equipping others to do the same in their cities and communities. They achieve this through a range of impactful initiatives, including organising events for those seeking sanctuary and implementing practical projects to support integration efforts.

Having myself been a part of one of Bridges’ flagship programmes, BeFriend, for over two years now, I can truly say it is magical. It's about more than just matching a local volunteer with a Bristol-based asylum seeker or refugee - it's about forging genuine connections, sharing experiences, and offering vital support. From weekly meetups filled with laughter and tea to exploring museums and galleries together, befriending is about being compassionate listeners, empathetic companions, and committed allies. It's a journey that transforms both the volunteer and the person they befriend, creating bonds that transcend borders and backgrounds.

As I prepare for this half marathon, I carry with me the stories and experiences of those who I have had the privilege of being paired with. With every stride, during training and race day, I will be reminded of the strength and perseverance of those who flee persecution and destitution, seeking a brighter future, as well as the power of human connection and the importance of fostering understanding and empathy in our communities.
