Launch an innovative News Centre in northern Malawi to empower youth and offer them a voice on a local and international level
Students from Worle and Weston-Super-Mare in the UK have been inspired by their local hero and journalist, Jill Dando, to establish a thriving news centre in her honour. Local triumphs and positive stories are not enough: they want to go international! As a teacher and project leader here in the UK I am bringing their model, skills and enthusiasm to Malawi in southern Africa where I support a very special charity.
The centre will be set up in partnership with the Limbikira Foundation (LIFO) in Mzimba, Malawi in a bid to empower youth and offer them a platform to share their voice. Stories from around the region will be shared locally, nationally, and internationally to create a collaborative media outlet led by young people.
The project will offer training and opportunity to budding journalists and provide a unique opportunity of interaction between students from two different cultural backgrounds. Students or school leavers (unemployed youth) will gain invaluable experience and learn what it means to be part of a hard-working, driven news team.
