Aim

Like most sports clubs Covid 19 has had a huge impact on Newry Rowing Club. We are crowdfunding to increase female participation in sport.

Newry Rowing Club is a voluntary, community sports organisation affiliated to Rowing Ireland. It was founded in 1873 and is based at the Albert Basin on Newry Canal.

The club provides a range of sports opportunities in both a competitive, social and recreational way. Rowing is becoming a popular sport in Newry and now has 60 active members training weekly.

Our club offers Rowing for Juniors from 13 years old + and we welcome all ages to come down to Newry Canal and give rowing a go. Our membership ranges in age from 12 - 61.

The Challenge

Like many sports clubs we had experienced two years of restrictions on our training and races because of the Covid 19 pandemic. Last year we crowdfunded with our project "Get Rowing Going" to get more people rowing on Newry Canal.

The response to our project was amazing and truly did get rowing going in Newry. But now we're faced with a new challenge how to we continue to provide for all those who want to take part in sport?

Our main focus of development is our women and junior girls rowing programmes. We have had increased uptake in participation from female athletes wanting to join a team sport, improve their fitness and enjoy rowing both recreationally and competitively.

But our challenge is to get these women and girls on the canal. Our biggest difficulty is our equipment which is all typically end of life bulky and heavy. We want to encourage female participation which is why we have launched our programme Newry Girls Can.

The Project - Newry Girls Can

We at Newry Rowing Club want to showcase what rowing is all about and we want to encourage as many women and girls to take part in sport as we can. We want to provide the opportunities for women and girls both to take part and coach rowing sessions on Newry Canal.

We hope to launch a female development session where young girls and teenagers from local secondary schools will come down to take part in rowing.

Over the past year our juniors have been working on coaching and development programmes. We now want to provide a female development session for local junior girls ran by junior girls.

The aim is for the sessions to be run by women and girls for women and girls to provide not only a chance to take part in the sport but to provide role models for young children to look up to whilst giving existing members the opportunity to develop their leadership skills.

Junior Leadership Programme

We are so thankful for all of the young volunteers that we have in the club and we want to develop them even further. We want to develop our young coaches providing them with skills that they can use both on and off the water.

We want to extend our junior development programme for are rowers aged 13 -18. As a club we rely on our volunteers and we want to develop our young rowers to be our future coaches teaching them leadership skills, first aid and coaching skills.

We want to provide these classes so that all of our juniors are able to continue healthy habits and work on their strength and fitness as they get older. The cost of these sessions are £800.
