We need around £8,500 per year to run the Newcastle Phoenix Choir - that's around £250 per session. This covers materials and resources and pays the wages of our musical director and support staff. The extra income will help us to sustain our activity even longer.
The Newcastle Phoenix Choir is a group that welcomes everyone who would like to sing, with no exceptions.
Newcastle Phoenix Choir began life at J’s & B’s in August 2021 following Streetwise Opera’s withdrawall from the North East after the Covid pandemic.
Former Streetwise workshop leaders Simon Davies-Fidler (who is also the Director of Music at J’s & B’s) and Liz Milner wanted to create a new place for the Streetwise performers to continue the good work of Streetwise Opera, and so Newcastle Phoenix Choir was born!
Whilst Streetwise Opera’s mission is to engage with people who have experienced homelessness, Newcastle Phoenix Choir’s scope is wider: we welcome singers from all backgrounds, especially people recovering from some form of social exclusion who haven’t yet found a choir that suits their needs.
Singing together boosts confidence and self esteem. It gives individuals the opportunity to develop new skills and literally find a voice. For some members this might be their first opportunity to speak and sing in front of others or the first chance to work in a team organising part of a concert or event - something to be proud of in a safe and supportive space full of joy.
Our simple mission is to give our members an uplifting experience through singing and socialising. Our team of professional musicians, support workers and volunteers will be there every Friday at 2pm-3.30pm to sing songs, drink tea and eat cake!
Newcastle Phoenix Choir’s repertoire isn’t limited to a particular style. We’ll explore songs from many cultures and genres; if it’s enjoyable to sing, we’ll sing it!
