Aim

Relocate from our existing terrain to a new purpose built terrain which will be located at Westow Cricket Club and Community Pavillion

Westow Pétanque Club was founded in the early 1980s on a disused Tennis court at Westow, which was kindly donated by Lord Grimthorpe to the Village. We hold club social sessions and participate in the North York Petanque league. We are a small club with big ambition to grow the local participation in our sport and make it accessible to all.

The best game you've never heard of

Similar to bowls but with steel balls on gravel, Pétanque is fun, sociable, and competitive, involving strategy and sometimes luck. It also becomes addictive. It’s a sport that’s a great leveller as is can be played by all ages, genders and physical abilities at the same time.  Physical and mental well-being has been in the forefront  since lockdown and Pétanque has long been known to have health benefits, players, both old and new, coming to our club have now realised just how important the fresh air, friendship and freedom they gain from playing Pétanque.

  • Why Move

We love our existing location in the heart of the lovely village of Westow near Malton, however the pandemic has highlighted several issues with our current terrain. Currently access is through an area now being used as a builders yard. We have no toilet and parking is an issue in the village centre. We came to realise that to grow our club and provide adequate facilities we needed to relocate.

An opportunity arose to use a piece of land situated just around the corner at the village cricket club (as pictured above). We want to build a top grade terrain which will be to competition specifications and include disabled access. The fantastic new Pavilion can provide a function room with kitchen-bar, parking and toilets, all of which we currently can’t provide. The pavillion is already a fantastic venue for events such as Yoga and Arts and Crafts fairs.

What will we use the money for.

We had a professional quote to build the new terrain at £12000.00 and have been fundraising to get to this target. We have had fantastic support from Ryedale District Council and NYCC plus grants from the Lions Club and a generous offer of stone to form the base from Watts quarries, however we are still short of £2000 to complete the project.

We appreciate that times are tough however we firmly believe that an amenity like this will prove a great asset to the area. Any money raised will be used to help us complete the project. We need a top dressing of gravel, and we need to install wooden sleepers around the perimeter of the playing area for safety reasons. Also if funds allow we would like to provide disabled access and seating, which would be required for events and matches.

How our project will be united by the legacy of Birmingham 2022..

To celebrate the success of the 2022 Commonwealth games we aim to create a local legacy. The project will be united by Birmingham 2022 and will embrace the development of youth in the local area. Although not yet a Commonwealth sport our governing body has made bids to be included in the next games. The legacy of the games in Birmingham is about getting as many people as possible active and participating in sport. We will provide a state-of-the-art facility to inspire and engage local youth organisations to participate in this fantastic sport. The facility will be used to connect communities and get more people active ultimately living a happier and healthier life.
