Who are we?

Risbygate Sports Club is a community multi-sport club in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, providing tennis, squash, padel tennis and bowls. Our aim is to increase accessibility to and participation in these sports. Those who came along to the recent open weekend and watched the club finals will have seen many of the incredible junior players we have in our coaching programme, it is hard including photos with groups of children so this is our first ever group padel coaching session which is bringing people together and increasing participation every day.

1694445761_padel_coaching.jpeg

The open day this last bank holiday was a huge success for the club with lots of local families coming into the club to see what we offer

1694534658_screenshot_2023-09-12_5.00.58_pm.png

Why are we crowdfunding?

We have a vision to bring racket sports to a much wider group within our local community, we want to make tennis, padel tennis and squash something friends and families do together for fun, we want to be able to expand our existing Special Needs tennis programme and continue to grow our junior coaching work.

A project to add padel tennis courts and two new tennis courts was derailed by the energy price crisis and a reduction in membership this year during the cost of living crisis. As a club we made a hard decision to go ahead with the padel element of this plan as the only short term way to generate desperately needed new revenue but as we could not now afford the tennis element of the plan this means adding padel has come at the expense of tennis.

We now want to raise funds to enable us to deliver the second half of the original plan and expand the club's tennis facilities. Padel tennis is all about inclusivity and community engagement, we have added a new cafe to the site and are bringing people into the club who have not previously played racket sports. We want tennis and padel to take this journey hand in hand.

1694445833_screenshot_2023-09-10_9.42.24_pm.png

How we’ll spend the money raised

The money will be spent entirely on the cost of building new tennis courts. Our vision is to build two new courts and floodlight those plus the existing two courts with LED lights but this is a huge project. Our plan is to approach this in sensible, manageable phases so the club facilities improve quickly but we keep our finances secure.

Community impact

Risbygate has one of the largest junior coaching programmes of clubs in our region and a successful Special Needs coaching partnership with a local school, both of which we want to expand.

Here is our brilliant coach Paul Hope trying to match the enthusiasm of the kids from the school in a tennis session last term ..

1694539820_screenshot_2023-09-12_6.29.02_pm.png

Equally important though we want to bring local people into the club who may previously have seen our sports as things for other people, we want to make coming to the club as a family as normal as going to the leisure centre for a swim at the weekend. We aim to do this by making all activities as affordable as possible and by making the experience social and fun, not just a court where you go by yourself

Since opening the Padel courts we are already seeing this happen with large numbers of new people and families coming into the club. We need to make sure tennis is part of this which means we need to get this new court built.

Our annual club championships bring junior and, well, less junior, players together, Erin, pictured here, is one of many nationally ranked players we are lucky to have at the club, not really a fair contest but a great weekend of tennis.
