BRIXHAM AFC, who are we ?
We offer football for ages from 9 years old to adults and form a big part of the community in Brixham. We have the only floodlight pitch in Brixham and have recently been promoted to Step 6 on the football ladder, this means this season we can enter the FA cup for the first time in our history.
How the club benefits the community
During the pandemic we have found our member's have struggled, both mentally and physically without football, training and matchdays, it has really showed what a big part Brixham AFC plays in the lives of those involved from youth players, parents, adult players, committee members and supporters. Having a updated facility that will be able to offer football for all, will help with the some of issues people have been experiencing during the pandemic and beyond.
COVID Impact
Covid has had a major effect on the club and the community, nearly all of our committee are elderly and had to isolate/shield for very long periods and found this hard as they missed the contact at the club on matchdays. We tried to keep in contact on Zoom but not all could work the system. We also had all our youth players and parents unable to use the facility for long periods of time, this lead to some player's not keen on getting back involved when they could and we had to work with the parents to get them back playing. During the lock down the general maintenance around the facility was stopped and meant we fell behind on routine jobs as well as the large issue around the netting.
Our Vision
We want to offer football for the community for a long time and need to keep updating the facility with long tern solutions to allow this to happen, our youth system has already meant the adult teams are made up of players who have played in our youth teams.
Our long term vision is to have the adult teams made up completely of players who have played youth football at the club, this will mean we really are providing football for all ages an ability across Brixham.
We are the only floodlight grass football facility in Brixham and we want to be able to use the facility safely for the players, supporters and our neighbours.
The problem
Our pitch is surrounded by housing and allotments, we have had a wooden pole and heavy netting system in place to stop balls going into the neighbor gardens and allotments and causing damage to their property or person. We have had to remove the current netting as the poles started leaning dangerously towards the houses and allotments. Without this netting we are unable to play football as its too dangerous for the nearby properties and allotments. We have funded the replacement of a large amount of this netting, with new more sustainable long term solution but need support to finish it off, this will allow us to play football once the season restarts.
THE CURRENT NETTING IS OLD DAMAGED AND DANGEROUS
Part of the old netting having to be removed
New netting is safer more long term and less of an eysore
