In the UK over 3500 people sleep 'rough' every night. - Working with existing organisations Nests hopes to make this a thing of the past.
In the UK over 3500 people sleep 'rough' on any one night. Around the western world that number increases into the tens of thousands, possibly even the hundreds of thousands. People who sleep rough are vulnerable, not only to the elements, but also ill health, abuse and violence. Nests wants to ensure that no one should have to spend even a single night without shelter.
Nests have been working with architects, engineers and other charities to develop a safe, warm shelter for those who sleep rough. These pods include:-
A raised bed platform with storage underneath;
A chemical toilet;
An electric socket;
A heater;
A heat alarm;
and of course lighting.

We've used a chemical toilet and solar panels so that the pods do not need to be connected to any utilities- meaning that with their size they won't require planning permission.
The solar panels also mean that, energy wise, they are self sustaining.
A nest would only be a temporary shelter but could be used by one person for a number of weeks while they work with local delivery partners to access more permanent accommodation.
The nests are also designed to be easy to clean - with no soft furnishings making it easy to ensure they can be quickly and thoroughly cleaned so there is no delay between someone moving out and someone moving in.
There's so much we would like to tell you and we are here to answer any questions you may have.
We'd love to see the day nests are no longer necessary but, while they are, we need your help to provide as many nests as possible to keep people safe and warm.
WHAT'S THE MONEY FOR?
Up until this point we've been able to do everything on good will. From the architect to the existing charities we've worked with - everyone has given their time and expertise for free.
Now we need to get the plans off paper and make them a reality - starting with a prototype so we can review and refine in order to make sure no one has to sleep rough or feel unsafe.
Prototyping is an expensive process but our calculations and quotes from industry show that the final pods will cost between £2500-£3000.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
We've worked for the last 9 months, and we've worked hard, to make sure that the risks are minimal. The biggest challenge is getting the prototype made and the design finalised in time to have nests on the streets for Christmas 2016.
