We are helping those with no support in prison, their families who are often unable to support their loved ones, and prison leavers.
*Sadaqa only, not Zakat.
Nejma Collective CIC is re-launching its Ramadan fundraiser because we realise how the so-called justice system continues to mete out harsh sentences, punishment, and treatment of those on the inside, those who leave prison, and the loved ones who try to support them.
Many of our siblings in prison are Muslim - in fact, 18% of the England and Wales prison population is Muslim while Muslims make up only 6% of the general population. But at Nejma, we don't discriminate on faith and try to help as many people who reach out to us as possible.
However, this year, we are doing things differently as we make one key change while going through structural changes: We are pausing our prisoner grants. Previously, we sent a grant of £65 to anyone who requested it. But, given that we are a small volunteer-run collective, we struggle with the capacity to process all of these (rest assured that anyone on the current waiting list will be honoured Inshallah).
So, this year's fundraiser will go towards prison leavers who need support with re-starting their lives, it will help the families of those locked up visit their loved ones, especially as these prisons tend to be far away from their home towns, and any other ad-hoc costs they need support with. This is to combat the alienation and solitude that prisons rely on to isolate its inhabitants.
And because Nejma started out as a collective to help those on the inside, we will also donate to a specific number of prisoners who are especially struggling, so they feel the camaraderie, love, and support of their siblings on the outside. We will also be sending Eid gift bags to some of our locked up siblings so they can also celebrate this joyous day.
All the donations raised will be used exclusively for those listed above - Nejma will not pocket any costs (though Crowdfunder takes a cut of 2.4% +£0.20 +VAT per transaction). When the fundraiser is over, we will send a newsletter with full transparency showing a breakdown of where the money is going.
We encourage non-Muslims and Muslims to donate, especially the latter for whom guidance can be sought from our beloved Prophet Muhammed ﷺ, peace and blessings be upon him, who had an unconditional nature of generosity that we should attempt to emulate.
*Please note these donations are therefore not zakat-eligible as we cannot ensure that every recipient of our donations meets the threshold for zakat which is only for Muslims. However, please remember that sadaqa which is given in Ramadan is rewarded the same as giving zakat outside of Ramadan, so please know that your efforts to help those trapped in these draconian systems will be immensely rewarded, especially in such a holy time as beloved to Allah as Ramadan.
