Aim

Helping 120 girls in Hackney take climate action through nature, waste reduction, community campaigns and environmental leadership.

Teens Trailblazers: Nature in Action – Youth Climate Champions

Teens Trailblazers is a youth organisation dedicated to enhancing the lives of young people through recreational activities, personal development opportunities and community engagement. We provide safe, inclusive spaces where young people can build confidence, develop practical skills and become active, responsible members of society.

Nature in Action: Youth Climate Champions is a year-long climate action programme engaging 120 girls aged 13–16 across Hackney in outdoor learning and environmental action. Many young people in the area have limited access to structured activities during weekends and school holidays, despite living close to valuable green and blue spaces such as parks, wetlands and the River Lea.

Through regular outdoor sessions, participants will explore local environments, learn about wildlife and ecosystems, and develop a stronger connection to nature. They will take part in practical activities including litter mapping, community clean-ups and environmental observation, helping them understand and respond to local environmental challenges.

The project also focuses on reducing waste and promoting sustainable behaviours. Young people will learn how to reduce food waste using surplus fruit and vegetables, gaining hands-on experience in simple food preservation techniques such as pickling and preserving. They will also take part in clothes swaps and reuse activities that encourage more sustainable consumption.

A central feature of the programme is the youth-led “One Bag Less” campaign, which empowers participants to work with families and the wider community to reduce household waste, increase reuse and adopt more environmentally responsible behaviours.

The project directly addresses the Climate Action funding priority by helping young people protect and improve local environments, reduce waste, increase reuse and build long-term positive environmental habits within their communities.

How we'll spend the money raised

Funding will deliver a year-long climate action programme for 120 girls aged 13–16 in Hackney.

The funds raised will be used for:

• Youth worker and project delivery costs

• Outdoor environmental learning sessions

• Venue and activity space costs

• Food waste reduction and preservation activities

• Clothes swap and reuse initiatives

• One Bag Less campaign materials

• Transport and accessibility support

• Environmental equipment and learning resources

• Community engagement and evaluation

Every contribution will help young people develop practical environmental skills while taking positive action to improve their local environment.

By supporting this project, you will help young people become confident environmental leaders while creating cleaner, greener and more sustainable neighbourhoods across Hackney.
