Project aim

To help sufferers of the skin disorder acne vulgaris. Providing a natural and holistic approach instead of ineffective medicated treatments.

About the project

Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disorder affecting 85% of all people at some point in their lives. In the UK it is estimated up to 12 million people and in the Unites States up to 50 million people suffer with acne.

The most common treatments that dermatologists use to treat acne do not cure the root cause. They only suppress acne for the short term and in some cases make it worse, whilst skincare products containing fragrances and harsh chemicals are toxic to the skin.

We have developed the answer - Natural Dermatology. A holistic acne regimen consisting of natural skincare products, to be used alongside a lifestyle that goes more than skin deep.

Our natural skincare products will consists of:

2. Witch Hazel & Roman Chamomile Antibacterial Toner

3. Avocado & Safflower Day Moisturiser

4. Evening Primrose & Rosehip Night Cream

5. Coconut & Pumice Exfoliator

6. Carrot & Comfrey Face Mask

7. Multi Vitamin & Mineral Scar Serum

8. Cooling/Shaving Aloe Vera Gel

These will be sold through the Natural Dermatology website, which will also contain a holistic health blog dedicated to helping acne sufferers make the lifestyle changes needed to support our natural skincare products.

Project background

I suffered with acne for fifteen years. During this time I went back and forth countless dermatologists and received every type of conventional medication imaginable.

At the age of 30 and still suffering with severe acne, I decided to make a change and began researching the holistic health approach.

Holistic Health relates to treating the whole person rather than just focusing on the ailment itself. So when someone is ill, instead of merely providing suppressive medication to lessen their symptoms, holistic treatments prefer to take a broader outlook. This form of management investigates the underlying cause of the malady, rather than merely reducing the immediate problem.

In addition to making key changes to my lifestyle in line with holistic health, I believed it was equally important to ensure that I was only using suitable products on my skin.

However finding products on the market was very difficult. This prompted me to develop my own range of natural skincare products that optimised skin health and did not contain anything harmful.

Within 6 months of my new regimen I was free of acne for the first time in fifteen years. Having witnessed the positive results through my personal experience, I am certain that the key to acne treatment is to follow a natural approach.

This fuelled the business idea, Natural Dermatology. It cleared my acne and I want to help do the same for fellow acne sufferers. 

Thankfully, following successful completion of my computing and business degree at Plymouth University, it has given me the knowledge, skills and confidence to run my own business and turn this idea into reality.

Why I'm crowdfunding

I am extremely passionate and committed to share my products and knowledge of holistic health. Unfortunately this project requires significant funds to get off the ground, which I simply do not have.

This project is important because acne is a worldwide epidemic. It is not restricted to any particular age group and is certainly not just a teenage problem. In fact, the research shows that the number of adult acne patients is the age group of the greatest increase. 54% of people aged over 25 have some form of facial acne.

Also, the reduction of acne and acne scars is classed as essential or a high priority for 43% of skincare shoppers. This indicates there is a market need for these products.

The psychological effect of living with acne should not be underestimated. It can be a debilitating and life-changing condition. It is challenging to express the suffering I have experienced during long periods of my life when living with acne has been unbearable. It has affected my behaviours, isolated me and damaged my confidence, making me very self-conscious.

It felt like I was caught in a cycle where acne triggered my anxiety and depression, which consequently made my acne worse, making me more anxious and depressed.

I am not alone, 62% of adults with acne reported experiencing anxiety and/or depression.

Recommendation

More about me

My name is Jordan Marc Sully and I am 31 years old from Cardiff, United Kingdom.

Having suffered with acne for fifteen years, I consider myself to be highly knowledgeable within the area of skincare. My learning has been through years of experience, research and self-education.

After over a decade of receiving ineffective medications from my dermatologist, I became determined to find the root cause of my acne and develop an alternative, natural solution. In addition to studying the Holistic Health approach to medicine, I attended a natural skincare formulators course. Expanding my knowledge of ‘botanical cosmeceuticals’ and their benefits to the skin and in the treatment of acne.

From a business perspective, I graduated from Plymouth University with a BSc (Hons) degree in Computing for Commerce and Business degree. I then went on to run a small family business for 6 years. During this time I also completed my Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at Cardiff University.

In consideration of my experiences and passion for natural skincare and holistic health, I have complete confidence in my level of expertise in the subject matter. I also have the business acumen to launch this project and run it successfully.
