New stretch target

Thank you for your support!

We have managed to pass our initial target and we are so grateful for your generosity. The more money we raise the more children we can reach to teach them about our wildlife, helping them understand why and how to care for the environment and the wonderful creatures we share it with.

Inspire future butterfly guardians

The UK’s wildlife is under increasing pressure. Two-thirds of butterfly and moth species are in decline.

We need to motivate a new generation to love nature; creating guardians who will speak up for the natural world in the future.

Butterfly Conservation’s Munching Caterpillars project introduces seven to eleven year-olds tothe fascinating world of butterflies, moths and their caterpillars. The Munching Caterpillars team visits schools, youth groups and public events across the UK, bringing hands-on activities to children in towns, cities and rural areas. Activities include discovering about lifecycles, food plants, habitats and the important role butterflies and moths play in creating a healthy environment. We design and distribute educational resources such as ID guides and promote simple activities to help children discover more for themselves.

Inspire future generations to continue to protect threatened butterflies like the Duke of Burgundy and Wood White.

Teaching children about nature, through the fascinating world of butterflies and moths, encourages a sense of adventure, inspires children to lead happier, healthier lives and develops a connection with wildlife that will stay with them forever.

Project Officer Matt Brierley explains: ”Our workshops are all about getting the kids up close to nature. I love the look on their faces as we open up the moth trap and they see their first Hawk-moth. We like to get them grubby too – helping them plant up their school grounds with nectar and food plants is a great way of empowering them to make a difference.”

Your donation will make a big difference.

  • A £10 donation could buy a set of gardening tools for a school workshop
  • £25 could provide lenses and jars for children toget up close and personal with mini beasts while exploring a nature reserve;
  • £100 could give a primary school playground a pollinator makeover, creating a flower-rich haven for butterflies and moths;
  • £250 could get the Munching Caterpillars team into a school for a day, to deliver their inspirational workshops, bringing nature into more children’s lives.

Munching Caterpillars launched in Somerset and Dorset. The project is expanding to Bristol and Winchester and we need your help to expand even further across the UK.

”Butterflies, moths and their caterpillars are a perfect starting point for getting kids in to nature. They are familiar yet fascinating, beautiful yet fragile and you don’t have to go far or buy fancy equipment to find and observe them.” Kate Merry, Senior Education Officer

Help empower children to make a difference by introducing them to the captivating beauty of nature.
