The province of Málaga, in Andalusia, Spain, is home to exceptional natural wealth shaped by its diverse landscapes and privileged location. From the Sierra de las Nieves National Park to coastal cliffs, lagoons, and dunes, the region hosts a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. The Alboran Sea further enriches this mosaic with vibrant marine life, seagrass meadows, and four marine protected areas that underpin biodiversity and ecological resilience. However, Málaga’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems face growing pressure from mass tourism, intensive agriculture, climate change, and other environmental impacts, putting biodiversity and vital natural resources at risk.

The Malaga Province Environment Foundation (MPEF) was founded in January 2025 by Marbella Club and Conservation Collective to support high-impact grassroots initiatives that protect and restore the province’s natural environment. Our vision is a future in which Málaga’s local communities are actively involved and empowered, working alongside scientists and authorities to build a sustainable way of life in harmony with nature.

MPEF focuses on four main areas of interest: 

MPEF is led by our Executive Director, Dr. Lucía Vera Herrera, and guided by our Steering Committee, composed of core donors, who represent the strategic heart of the foundation. Additionally, we have our Advisory Board, made up of local experts who provide specialised guidance in different fields.

We are an agile charity that swiftly directs funding where it is most needed to deliver the greatest benefits for nature. Beyond bridging critical funding gaps, we reduce competition and foster collaboration among local changemakers with deep knowledge of the challenges they address.

In addition to financial support, we provide strategic guidance on project design and hands-on support throughout implementation, helping initiatives achieve meaningful and lasting impact on the ground. We also amplify the visibility and recognition of environmental groups, strengthening their capacity and reach.

In our inaugural year, 2025, we awarded €62,000 in grants to five high-impact initiatives, including the creation of a one-hectare Posidonia oceanica nursery on the Marbella coast, the restoration of an entire dune system, and support for Andalusia’s first protected bird recovery centre, among others.

Why are we Crowdfunding?

At MPEF, we receive local environmental proposals between two and four times a year through our Call for Proposals, keeping us constantly aware of new initiatives that need funding. 

We are currently oversubscribed with incredible proposals that have the potential to generate a tangible impact on Malaga’s natural spaces, local communities, and their relationship with the environment. This overwhelming response is both inspiring and motivating, reinforcing the urgent need for greater support. 

Through crowdfunding, we aim to expand our fundraising capacity, allowing MPEF to support even more incredible projects and continue our hands-on approach to empowering local grassroots initiatives across Malaga province.

MPEF & Conservation Collective

MPEF is a branch of the Conservation Collective (CC), an environmental charity that launches and grows global foundations with the goal of protecting and restoring the wild places we all know and love. Since 2008 CC has launched over 20 foundations around the world and dispersed millions to grassroots groups in the process. MPEF is proud to be a member of this global network of change makers.
