Aim

To provide two motorbikes for nurses and midwives to travel to rural areas to provide care for pregnant women and their families.

Togo is the 9th poorest country in the world and is situated in sub-Saharan West Africa.  Poverty contributes to the poor health of people living in Togo.  76 out of every 1000 children die before the age of five years and the maternal mortality rate is 368 per 100,000 live births (compared to 9 per 100,000  in the UK in 2015).

Judith, Raf and Ros were asked by the charity Vision Togo (Charity Commission number 1159287) to go to Togo to undertake a needs assessment. There we met with many dedicated and hard working nurses and midwives, nursing and midwifery teachers and enthusiastic students. In the rural north of the country we met community nurses and midwives who told us how difficult it was for them to reach mothers and children in remote villages as they had no transport of any kind.

Motorbikes are the commonest form of transport in the country and we want to raise money to provide two motorbikes for the community staff working at a remote health clinic in Togo.  This motorbike will help the community nurses and midwives to reach women and their children before pregnancy complications or illness of a child have become a risk to their life.

We are in contact with a charity representative in Togo who will ensure that the motorbike is purchased and delivered to the health clinic.  Each motorbike costs £500.00.

Please support us in helping to improve the health of women and their families in this forgotten country.

Many thanks, Judith, Raf and Ros
