"As we were leaving our house, we were so scared and disoriented that we couldn't even open the door to escape. Fortunately, one of us remained focused and managed to get us out. As we rushed outside, I noticed that our neighbour's roof had collapsed. Everyone was running out of their homes, and people were crying."
-- resident of Taroudant & volunteer with MCT & FAPE
The recent earthquake disaster in Morocco left residents in the town of Taroudant and the province of Taroudant without basic needs of food, water, clothing, and safe shelter. MCT is working with its long-time local partner based in Taroudant, Fondation Amane pour la Protection de l'Enfance (FAPE), to identify urgent needs among its community - some of the already most vulnerable families and children whom we serve through our work at Centre Amane.
The team took 24 hours to assess the impact of the earthquake in the town and province of Taroudant and to understand what the government is able to cover. We have identified urgent needs for which we need YOUR help to deliver:
Immediate term: Families are fearful and staying in the streets for safer shelter as homes are damaged and/or vulnerable to aftershocks
- Food
- Clothing
- School supplies
- Basic medicine
Medium term: Centre Amane expects to receive referrals from residents of nearby villages who are coming into the town of Taroudant
- Support abandoned children
- Provide services for children with new disabilities
- Obtain psycho-social support for residents
"I've lost my wife, my daughter, and my dad, and I have buried them here. I've lost everything, and my house collapsed. I have nowhere to go, and I feel helpless."
-- local farmer in Taroudant
"I lost four family members: my dad, my mom, my uncle, and my brother. I am still assisting my village by providing support to those in need. I consider all the injured and those still trapped underground as part of my family. I will do everything I can to help. Please, we need your help. We need tents, as there are children and babies without shelter. We also need food and clothing."
-- President of a local non-profit
Please NOTE: Local government authorities and rescue teams are the only ones able to access the most devastated communities in the remote mountain area. We are operating separately as a non-governmental organization, focused on providing immediate and medium-term support to residents just outside the town of Taroudant in the mountain areas of the province of Taroudant.
Funds raised will go towards immediate and long-term relief efforts in the province of Taroudant. If you have any questions about the support needed, both immediate and medium term, please contact us: [email protected]
