Help us transform an empty shop into a thriving Community Reuse Hub
Moretonhampstead has lost its charity shop and local clothing banks.
For many residents, this means there is now nowhere local to donate reusable items and fewer opportunities to buy affordable second-hand goods. Valuable resources are leaving the community, sustainable shopping options have disappeared, and opportunities for local people to volunteer, connect and support one another have been lost.
We believe every town deserves a place that gives things a second chance.
That's why Proper Job is raising £15,000 to create the Moretonhampstead Community Reuse Hub at the former newsagents at 1 Court Street, right in the heart of the town.
The hub will provide a welcoming space where people can donate quality items, discover affordable second-hand goods, volunteer, learn new skills and support a more sustainable future.

A Community-Led Project
This project began when members of the Moretonhampstead community approached Proper Job and asked whether we could help bring a community reuse space back to the town.
At the same time, an exciting opportunity emerged. The former newsagents at 1 Court Street became available.
Since then, we have been working closely with local residents and community organisations, including Wellmoor and the Moretonhampstead Community Shed, to explore how a new community reuse hub could complement the fantastic work already happening locally and help strengthen the town for the future.
Together, we have developed a vision for a welcoming community space where people can donate quality items, access affordable second-hand goods, volunteer, learn new skills and meet others.
This isn't about Chagford expanding into Moretonhampstead.
It's about helping Moretonhampstead create a community asset of its own.
From the outset, our goal has been to create something that belongs to Moretonhampstead. The idea came from local people and local organisations, and we want local voices to continue shaping its future.
As the project develops, we are seeking representation from the Moretonhampstead area on Proper Job's Board of Trustees to help ensure the Community Reuse Hub remains connected to the town and responsive to local needs.
Why Proper Job?
Proper Job has been serving communities across North East Dartmoor for more than 30 years.
What began as a small community composting project in 1993 has grown into an award-winning environmental charity dedicated to reducing waste, protecting the environment and strengthening communities through reuse, repair and recycling.
Today, Proper Job operates a successful Resource Centre and the popular Uptown shop in Chagford. Every year we give thousands of donated items a second life, helping people access affordable goods while reducing waste and conserving valuable resources.
We also provide volunteering opportunities, employment, repair activities, workshops and community events that bring people together.
We know community reuse works because we have been making it work for more than three decades.
A Different Kind of Reuse Shop
The Moretonhampstead Community Reuse Hub will complement, rather than replicate, our existing Uptown shop in Chagford.
Uptown specialises in carefully selected vintage, designer, antique and higher-value items.
The Moretonhampstead Community Reuse Hub will focus on providing affordable everyday essentials, including clothing, books, toys, household goods, gifts and useful items for the home.
Wherever possible, items donated in Moretonhampstead will stay in Moretonhampstead, allowing local donations to directly benefit the local community.
What Your Donation Will Fund
We are raising £15,000 to transform the former newsagents at 1 Court Street into a thriving Community Reuse Hub.
Your support will help us:
- Prepare and decorate the building.
- Install shelving, storage and displays.
- Purchase tills, computers and essential equipment.
- Create signage and shop fittings.
- Recruit and train volunteers.
- Cover solicitor's fees, lease costs and professional fees associated with securing the premises.
- Cover the first three months' rent while the project becomes established.
These essential investments will provide the foundations for a sustainable, long-term community resource that can benefit Moretonhampstead for years to come.
