SAVE A LIFE MONTROSE

When someone has a cardiac arrest following a heart attack, their life can be saved if their heart is restarted quickly using an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Montrose currently has several AEDs but only one is available 24 hours a day and this is not sited in the town centre. Most other towns in Angus and the rest of the UK already have readily accessible 24-hour AEDs.

Our campaign aims to raise funds to provide community access defibrillators which will always be available 24 hours a day in the public areas of Montrose and district where they are most likely to be needed.

WHAT IS AN AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED)?

  • An AED is a device which automatically gives a high energy shock to the heart through the chest wall
  • This high energy shock restarts the normal rhythm of the heart and is an essential life-saving step in the chain of survival
  • The machine gives clear spoken instructions to the user
  • The machine will not operate unless it detects that an electric shock is required
  • You don't need training to use the machine
  • Anyone can save a life

HOW DO WE KNOW THAT AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS SAVE LIVES?

  • 70,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur outside hospitals every year in the UK
  • A victim's chance of survival falls by 7-10% for every minute that defibrillation is delayed
  • Only rarely are the emergency services able to arrive early enough to save life by defibrillation
  • Use of a public access defibrillator by a bystander increases the chance of survival to 50-70%
  • Recently the life of an elderly man in Arbroath, who collapsed in the street, was saved by the use of a public access defibrillator donated by Arbroath Rotary Club
  • Professional golfer Bernard Gallacher suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in Aberdeen, while giving a speech, and was resuscitated with a defibrillator. He and his family are now campaigning for more public access to these machines

WHY IS OUR PROJECT SO IMPORTANT TO THE MONTROSE COMMUNITY?

  • Currently Montrose has only one public access defibrillator sited away from the town centre at the local golf club
  • There are no public access defibrillators in the centre of the town nor in the local villages of Ferryden, Hillside and Craigo
  • This is in stark contrast to many towns where public access defibrillators are readily available
  • We know that 24-hour access defibrillators help to save lives

WHY SHOULD YOU HELP?

  • It could be your life, a loved one, a stranger-All lives are important
  • It's too late after the event to say: "If only........."
  • Our Community NEEDS more public access defibrillators

WHO ARE WE?

d96ceb6aafd878058b02b7758e527253af65750a

We are a small team working on behalf of Montrose Inner Wheel and Rotary clubs. We are passionate in our mission to raise funds through Crowdfunder and to install 24-hour access automated external defibrillators in our local communities of Montrose, Ferryden, Hillside and Craigo.

We all live in or near to Montrose, a small coastal town in Angus with a population of approximately 15,000. Montrose sits between Dundee and Aberdeen and has a wide sandy beach and an active port which is a centre for international trade and support for the oil industry. We have taken the time to research the project's needs and the best locations for siting community access defibrillators. We have also consulted with local organisations and groups who have raised funds to install AEDs in their communities.

We have local support from Scottish Ambulance Service, Montrose First Responders, Montrose Emergency Services Group, Angus Cardiac Group, local General Practitioners, Angus Council, Hillside, Dun and Craigo Community Council, Ferryden Community Council, Links Park Community Trust and Montrose YM.

HOW MUCH DO WE NEED?

  • Our target is £3000
  • £1500 is needed to purchase and install just one automated external defibrillator in a weatherproof case and small additional costs are required for maintenance and replacement of batteries
  • The more money we raise the more defibrillators we can purchase and make available to our community

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • PLEASE donate to our appeal through Crowdfunder Angus
  • It could be your life that is saved or the life of a loved one
  • All contributors will receive an invitation to a CPR and defibrillator demonstration training session run by local emergency services
  • We need your donations however large or small

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
