Our Crowdfunder Prize Draw is for a model of the former pirate radio ship the ‘Norderney’, which served as a base for offshore broadcasts for the Dutch station Radio Veronica from November 1964 to August 1974. The model measures 47 cm length x 10 cm width x 39 cm high.

Due to the delicate nature of the model it can be delivered to a mainland UK address only. An overseas winner will need to arrange collection

Prize kindly donated by model-maker Jim Neale

History of the ‘Norderney’

Originally named the ‘Paul J Müller' the ship was built in 1949/50 in Germany for a shipping company in Hamburg, and served as a fishing trawler in international waters off Iceland. In July 1956, the vessel was sold to the Niedersächsische Hochseefischerei GmbH and renamed the 'Norderney'.

In 1960, the ship was sold and due to be scrapped in The Netherlands.

In 1964 the 'Norderney' was purchased by Dutch radio station Radio Veronica as a replacement for the station’s first radio ship the ‘Borkum Riff’. The vessel was converted into a radio ship in The Netherlands. The ‘Norderney’ entered service as the new home for Radio Veronica in November 1964 until August 1974

The Cause

‘Ross Revenge' is in urgent need of dry docking, where surveys and structural repairs can be carried out. We hope to get the ship in to dry dock at Lowestoft in the spring.

Our prize draws supplement our fundraising appeal to achieve our goal of securing the future of our historic ship for generations to come. The former pirate radio ship 'Ross Revenge' is still regularly broadcasting at sea today and more than 1,200 visitors tour the ship each year. The vessel is an important part of both deep sea fishing and broadcasting history. To lose her would be a tragedy.
