The Mochdre Sports F.C. Ground Development programme aims to develop a sporting facility that will inspire current and future generations.

by Martin Brady, Chairman of Mochdre Sports F.C. in Colwyn Bay, Conwy Principal Area, United Kingdom

Who are we?

Mochdre Sports F.C. was founded in 1929.  We are a volunteer-run community football club that passionately provides children and adults of all ages with the opportunity to both partake in and spectate grassroots football, with wider facilities providing much broader experiences and community value.  We are not-for-profit, with all funds raised reinvested in enhancing equipment and playing facilities in order to provide as inspiring a sporting proposition to the community as possible.

We have c150 boys and girls playing football within our Junior section, ranging from U6 to U17, supported by family and friends every week.  We have a junior disability football team which started in May 2024.

We have a Senior men’s football team currently operating in the 4th tier of Welsh football, with aspirations to progress to higher tiers.  Their games generate a lot of interest from the local community and other nearby areas.  We also have a women’s football team which is open to women from the local community to join.

Our aim is to play a pivotal role in the development of sporting and social skills, providing a platform for friendships and affinities to thrive whilst enabling a sense of togetherness and belonging throughout the local communities.  We aim to achieve this through sport but also through the many other events we hold annually, such as fireworks evening (which is always a huge success with the local community) and holding events to raise money for charities such as Mind Conwy and Breast Cancer Now (25/8/2024).  We also hold weekly BBQs for the local community.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Building a sporting stadium facility that inspires and aids both footballing and social development is a fundamental part of our 10-year community strategy.  We want children and adults who play at our football club, including future generations, to experience the very best, creating memories that will last forever.  We also believe that improved facilities will bring the local community much closer to our club, generating a thriving match day experience across the age groups.

To support this campaign, Mochdre Sports F.C. will hold a pier-to-pier walk on Sunday 22nd June where we are looking for players across the club, their families and friends, to come together and help us work towards these goals.  Starting up at Colwyn Bay pier at 11am, finishing 6 miles later at Llandudno pier.

If we meet our target, we will donate 10% of the funds we raise ourselves to a local charity which club members will vote on during May 2025.

How we’ll spend the money raised

The funds raised will be used to develop club accessibility, pathways and spectator facilities for the benefit of everyone associated with our club along with our many visitors, with the aim to encourage even more people within the community to come together more regularly at our venue to enjoy watching sport and socialising in our club house.  This includes full wheelchair access around our main football pitch.

10% of the funds raised by Mochdre Sports F.C. will be donated to a local charity.  A poll will be issued shortly to our members to decide which is the right charity for us to show our support to.

We have planning permission for spectator pathways and two spectator stands, one of which is already in place as of January 2025.

Community impact

This project supports our overall vision, which sets out to:

  • Increase community engagement in local sports and the associated social benefits.  Create a ‘hub’ for people to meet on weekends and evenings, developing a greater sense of togetherness, belonging and community.
  • Provide more inviting, comfortable, accessible and inclusive football spectator facilities, complementing the existing club house facilities, we will see more people visit the club during periods where the weather is less favourable.  That will help to create an environment that is as much about community and friendships as it is about the football itself.
  • Encourage more regular spectators to the club that in turn will increase revenue, enabling us to reinvest in further developing our facilities and spectator experiences for all.
  • Create a football arena with higher quality spectator facilities that will be inspiring to the children who play football at our club, along with their families.  It will create a sense of pride, belonging and help develop a culture whereby children will forge long lasting relationships with the club and its members that they will carry forward into adulthood.  We also believe a more inspiring football arena will aid sporting and social skills.
