Writing + casting I Need A Miracle season 2

Aim

I want to pay a pantheon of writers to pen a second season of the micro-fiction podcast I Need A Miracle.

In your benevolence, heed my plea

I Need A Miracle is an original micro-fiction podcast where each episode is a prayer, some prayers are answered, and a miracle can upend the world.

All 12 episodes of season 1, which came out in 2024, were the work of one writer: Matt Boothman (that's me! I'm writing this too!). For season 2, I want to bring in a pantheon of different writers to make the show's miraculous world even richer – and more wondrously unpredictable. 

I didn't pay myself for season 1. I do want to pay the writers this time. The £2,400 I'm asking for will pay:

• 6 writers to write an episode each
• a story consultant to suggest connections and a season arc to weave the scripts together
• a casting director to cast voice actors for each episode.

Once scripts are finished and actors are cast, I'll fundraise for full production (recording, editing, sound design, music, and more).

The story consultant: Ella Watts (she/her) is a queer director, writer and producer, best known for her podcasts Camlann: An Audio Drama, Doctor Who: Redacted and Eliza: A Robot Story. Ella directed on Re: Dracula and Re: Carmilla, as well as season 3 of The Strange Case of Starship Iris. She also cast and directed The Beekeeper's Picnic, and was Head of Production for Zombies, Run! Ella is a passionate advocate for the queer community and audio fiction.

The writers:

Naomi Clarke (She/her) is a prolific scriptwriter most well known for her work on The Secret of St Kilda. The audio drama has garnered over 500k listens, 12 Audio Verse awards (including Best Writing), and festival nominations worldwide. With over 100 podcast credits, there’s very little she can’t do. Whether its production, performance or promotion, Naomi always commits to the bit 100%.

Edil May Hampsen (any pronouns) has written for Professor Pandemonium's Peculiar Panoply, from Law of Names Media.

Fiona K. T. Howat (She/Her) is a TTRPG podcaster, improviser and actual play producer who specialised in horror storytelling. She is one of the founders and show runners of Last Line. Rewind, a horror anthology podcast where TTRPGs bring the terror of the TV Glow to life.

Rhys Lawton (He/him) is an award winning performer, writer and director. He wrote web series 9ft², which offers a glimpse into the lives of people who find themselves in a 3ft by 3ft space, and flash-fiction anthology podcast Paddleboat.

Bel Lazarus (She/they) is a Nigerian writer of multiple mediums who often swings between writing horror and stories about the human condition. Which she thinks are fundamentally the same thing if you look at it from a certain perspective. She has written for Radio San Lazaro.

B. Z. Norohna (They/Them) is a Londoner who won't live there anymore. While they spend most of their time thinking about the sea, when they aren't, they can be found writing, listening to podcasts or playing with swords. They like to write about the intersection of queerness, religion and race, and have been described as an angry poet.

The producers: Wireless Theatre Company produced season 1 of I Need A Miracle, and they're on board to produce season 2 to the same amazing standard! They'll handle casting – and record and produce the episodes, assuming we raise enough to do that.

• Listener (£1+): regular updates about the project
• Murmur (£5+): add names to the pool for the writers to pull from when naming people and things in their episodes, plus what Listeners get
• Voice (£10+): a thank-you on the show homepage, plus what Murmurs get
• Petitioner (£25+): an ebook of all the scripts (seasons 1 and 2), I Need A Miracle mobile wallpaper and social network profile banners, a thank-you on the show Instagram and Tumblr, plus everything Voices get
• Favoured (£50+): demo recordings of the new episodes, read by the writers, plus everything Petitioners get
• Chosen (£80+): snaps, screenshots and scans of the team's notes and drafts, plus what the Favoured get
• Augur (£100+): Matt will do you a three-card Tarot reading (your choice of Literary Tarot or Waite-Smith) on Instagram, Tumblr, Bluesky or privately, plus what the Chosen get
• Miracle worker (£200+): sponsor one of the writers (get credited as their patron on the homepage and in their episode's show notes) and join an exclusive season 1 listening party with Matt and some of the team, plus what Augurs get
• Nameless god (£500+): commission an episode and Matt will write it*, plus everything the other tiers get

*You pitch the character and the prayer. I'm allowed to modify ideas to avoid contradicting existing worldbuilding, or outright reject ideas I don't want my name attached to. Feel free to prank me or make my job difficult, but I shan't be stitched up!

More money means more writers get paid to write more scripts.

• £2,850: Michelle Kelly writes an episode, bringing the season to 7 episodes!
• £3,100: Ella Watts writes an episode, bringing the season to 8 episodes!
• £3,350: Matt Boothman writes an episode in blank verse, bringing the season to 9 episodes!
• £3,700: 10 episodes (one of the writers gets to write 2, and get paid for both)!
• £3,850: 11 episodes!
• £4,100: 12 episodes (the same as season 1)!

Anything we raise over £4,100 starts the pot for getting these episodes produced.

Michelle Kelly (She/her) is a professional writer for stage and for tabletop roleplaying games, as well as an actor, voice actor and game designer. You may have heard her in audio dramas such as Dracula: 2004, The Holmwood Foundation, The Silt Verses, Shadows at the Door and The Secret of St Kilda, or seen her monologues and short plays performed on stages around the UK. When not juggling far too many freelance jobs, Michelle can usually be found curled up on the sofa with a cup of tea and her beloved greyhounds.

Matt Boothman (he/him) is the creator and lead writer of I Need A Miracle and the host of Merely Roleplayers, the podcast where theatrical people play roleplaying games. His dramatic writing has appeared in the podcast Of The Sword (Tal Minear), on stage at the London Horror Festival and in the anthology Carnacki: The New Adventures (Ulthar Press).
