Campaign Backers

This heavily damaged stretch of path on the iconic Kinder Scout in the Peak District won’t be repaired if we don’t hit our target.

Surrounded by cities like Sheffield and Manchester, the Peak District is one of the most popular - and busiest - national parks in the world. Around 16 million people live within an hour’s drive of it – not even Mount Fuji, towering over Tokyo, has more humanity on its doorstep.

The wild plateau of Kinder Scout hosts the Peak District’s highest point and attracts huge numbers of walkers and climbers annually. It is also famous for the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, which helped to create the access freedoms we enjoy today.

The problem

But the stretch of path below the fantastic wind-carved rocks of Ringing Roger has suffered significantly and now consists of an ugly scar of loose rock and soil which is rapidly expanding and encroaching on to the surrounding heather moorland.

Watch a video showing the extent of damage on the Ringing Roger path here.

The solution

To fix this damage and protect the precious peat underneath we want to carry out sensitive stone-pitched repairs we estimate will cost almost £28,000 in total.

In recent years much work has been done to regenerate the vegetation of Kinder Scout and other Peak District moors, which is vital for water quality and carbon capture, helped by sympathetic footpath work. But managing the impact of so many people is an ongoing challenge and problems remain.

What your pledge will achieve

If we do not reach our target in this campaign the repairs will not go ahead.

Please give what you can spare to help keep this symbol of the freedoms we all enjoy today beautiful.
