We aim to raise funds to design and purchase a memorial stone to commemorate the loss 25 years ago of Group Captain David Haward OBE

by Teesdale Aviation Day Memorials in Barnard Castle, County Durham, United Kingdom

Teesdale Aviation Day has been recording and commemorating the stories of lost Aviators and their aircraft for the last 30 years. We are a group of volunteer enthusiasts who hold an annual event in Barnard Castle to commemorate these fallen heroes.

Our most recent story is now 25 years old. The story of Group Captain David Haward OBE, the Base Commander of RAF Wittering still echoes among people from Stainton and Staindrop near Barnard Castle and many personal stories of the 18th December 1998 are still raw for some. 1714830436_photo-2018-09-28-19-10-19.jpg.article-620.jpg

Whilst flying a Hawker Harrier II registry ZD434 on a simulated bombing run over agricultural fields on Stainton Moor he lost control of the aircraft and crashed into fields of Shepherd's Lodge Farm. He courageously fought with the aircraft to prevent a collision with buildings and communities in that area. Later the community hailed Group Captain Haward a true hero for averting a much larger disaster.

A tree was planted in 1999 to commemorate this tragic day but sadly this perished.

After a quarter of a century it is now time to properly commemorate this RAF hero and cement in place a lasting reminder of his courage, dedication and his service to this country.

We are designing and will purchase a suitable Military Memorial Stone with a significant piece of a Hawker Harrier to be placed in a beautiful position close to the crash site. This will have good access for those who wish to view and pay their respects in the future.
