To purchase a memorial bench to honour WW1 Gnr. Willie Webber. 2nd October 1918
"THANK YOU" to all who have supported my cause through Crowdfunding to purchase a bench of remembrance for Gunner Willie Webber, killed in action 2nd October 1918.
All the funds have now been raised, he will be remembered 🙏💕🙏
Project story:
Gunner Willie Webber wrote over 100 letters to his wife Gladys while he was with the British Expeditionary Force in France during 1918. I am fortunate enough to be the custodian of these letters, with the aim to transcribe and publish for all to witness this forgotten history. Letters from the past offer intimate, first-hand glimpses into the daily lives, emotions, and thoughts of people from the past, they are invaluable for historical research. While researching the life of Gunner Willie Webber, who lost his life in a terrible accident with Gunner David Evans on 2nd October 1918, it became apparent that he is not remembered on a memorial in England or Wales.
Willie Webber was born in Plymouth, England and his last known address with his beloved wife, Gladys Valentine, was in Knighton, Wales. Although both he and Gnr. Evans have a grave in France, only Gnr. Evans is remembered on a memorial in Wales. I have been fortunate enough to be given permission from St Edwards church in Knighton, Wales - the place where Willie and Gladys married in December 1917 - to place a bench in the church grounds in his memory. The support and encouragement I have already been shown, is second to none. Local residents of Knighton have offered their services to help, including someone who will level the ground where the bench is to be situated. In addition to this we have a bugler to play the Last Post at the dedication accompanied by a piper to play a lament. Knighton local youth groups, have also offered to attend the dedication to remember Gnr. Willie Webber. Local historians have helped me visit places mentioned in the letters to gain a better understanding of the surroundings and places the couple would tread. It is a very moving story and I hope that I am able to give it the justice it deserves.
These people gave their all, it is a duty to thank and remember them.
